Holiday Cottages in Mousehole

Mousehole is a small fishing village in the Far West between Penzance and Land's End. It was once a thriving landing point for pilchards.

The origination of the nomination of "Mousehole" is unknown but the famous story suggests that the sea is a prowling cat, and the harbour creates a safe-haven for the boats/mice within it.

The village, which Dylan Thomas once described as 'the loveliest in England', has not changed much over the years and retains its charm and traditional feel today.

The streets are narrow and lined with cottages built from Lamorna granite. There are several arts and crafts shops as well as cafes, pubs, restaurants, a Post Office, Church, gift shops and galleries.

The harbour is a hub of activity throughout the year, with the annual highlight surely being the famous Christmas festivities. Each Christmas the village is decorated with all sorts of lights and lanterns, including some afloat the harbour water. The Mousehole lights are well loved by locals and tourists alike, and people will travel for miles to see the displays. It is even possible to take a helicopter ride from Penzance to view the Mousehole lights from the sky. The lights are distinguished between 8 and 9pm each December 19 as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the Penlee Lifeboat tragedy of 1981. The lifeboat, the Solomon Browne, was called upon to try and rescue the crew of the Union Star, who had got into trouble in the winter storms just off the coast of Lamorna. There were no survivors from either the Union Star or the Solomon Browne. Today, Penlee Point, where the lifeboat was launched from, acts as a memorial to all those lost.

It should be noted that parking in the village is limited and as such, it is advised to park outside of the village and walk in. Also, dogs are banned from the harbour throughout the year and there are seasonal bans on the beaches as well.
