  • Michael

    “Clean, comfortable and well equipped.”

This cottage is in a lovely quiet rural setting well placed to explore the Lizard and further afield for the whole of West Cornwall. Our only concern was that the hot water was scalding hot and young children would definitely need to be supervised.

The property

Cornish country charm in glorious green surroundings, Woodpecker Cottage has character in spades.

Wake up to birdsong, breakfast in the sunshine and spend evenings in front of the inglenook fireplace.

Part of a tiny hamlet approached down a narrow winding no-through lane, this is a chance to really get away from it all. The local Helford River area is lush, green and rural with tree lined creeks, tiny coves and deserted beaches so pack your walking boots and head out to explore.

Fancy messing about in boats?

Self-drive motor or rowing boats, kayaks and even paddle boards can all be hired at Helford Passage.

With pleasure trips from Falmouth and a passenger ferry linking the two great pubs of Helford Village and Helford Passage, there should be something for everyone.

Just under 3 miles from the property is the Poldark Tin Mine and Gardens, an open air museum in a beautiful rural setting, bringing the past to life.

Provisions can be picked up in the nearby villages of Gweek and Constantine, both of which are also home to good foodie pubs.

Local town Helston has supermarkets and more and fabulous Falmouth is within easy reach for a more cosmopolitan day out. Inside Woodpecker Cottage has ample space for four with a lovely large sitting room with beautiful inglenook fireplace and spacious kitchen on the ground floor.

Upstairs are two really roomy bedrooms, one double and one twin which can be zip and linked to create a king size on request; each with an en-suite shower room.

All rooms overlook the pretty garden and fields beyond whilst immediately in front of the cottage is a private terrace which is alive with colour all year round and beautifully tended by the owners who live adjacent.

The lawn beyond is shared with the owners and guests are also welcome to stroll around the eight acres of fields and woodland that surround the property.

About the location

HELSTON

Porthleven 3 miles; Falmouth 12 miles; Penzance 14 miles.

Helston lies at the western gateway to the Lizard Peninsula, a large area of downland fringed by a beautiful and spectacular coastline. Helston is a pleasant busy market town famous for its Flora Day Festival and the many stories and legends about the "Furry Dance" are told in the fascinating Helston Folk Museum. Nearby is the Poldark Mine, one of the best underground experiences in the south west and which tells of the widespread mining heritage of this area. Nestled in a tranquil setting is the National Seal Sanctuary on the Helford River, where there is plenty of entertainment watching seals play and feed. If it is thrill rides that excites you, then Flambards theme park will keep you amused all day and also has excellent living history experiences. Further afield is the harbour town of Falmouth to the east and Land's End to the west. Helston is a wonderful holiday destination offering plenty of attractions for the whole family.
