The long beaches at Pentewen and Porthpean and the harbour villages of Mevagissey, Charlestown and Fowey are within a 15 minute drive and some of Cornwall's best gardens, including the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan, and the National Trust owned Lanhydrock are also close by. St Austell itself has a full range of amenities and the 4 screen cinema, ten pin bowling, Kid's World (indoor children's play area), Cornish Market World (the country's largest indoor market) and new shopping centre provide entertainment on rainy days.
