The town of Rock is situated across the Camel estuary from Padstow. The name Rock hails back to when rocks from the local quarry were used as ballast by sailing ships which had unloaded their cargo at Padstow. Today the quarry is a car park. Rock is a very popular holiday spot among the wealthy and professional, and has even been visited by Princes William and Harry, who learned to waterski here. Rock and Daymer Bay have indeed become well known for water sports due to the sheltered location. A sailing club is situated at the waterfront, and the surrounding waters teem with dinghies, yachts and cruisers. A foot ferry, The Black Tor, carries passengers to and from Padstow during the day, and a water taxi is available after dark. Rock boasts one of only two Michelin starred restaurants in Cornwall, The Black Pig. The other restaurant is St Ervan Manor in Padstow. There is an eighteen hole golf course at St Enodoc, and John Betjeman, the former poet laureate, is buried at St Enodoc's church. Also buried here are some of the sailors and fishermen who lost their lives on the infamous Doom Bar. Several centuries ago, the church became almost completely buried under sand from the beach and was hence nicknamed 'Sinking Neddy'.
