A selection of holiday properties in Truro
Truro is Cornwall's capital city and is considered to have the best shopping centre of the county. On the piazza alone (where Lemon Street car park used to be) there is a Debenhams, Marks and Spencer, Quiksilver, Rip Curl and Viyella as well as the Hall for Cornwall, M.I. Bar, Mannings Hotel and Restaurant, a Wetherspoons, Fabrics shop, Rowes pasty shop, Harbourside Fish n Chips, Pizza Pantry and entrance to the Pannier Market where an abundance of fascinating objects can be found as well as groceries and other food stuffs, clothes and souvenirs. There is also a flea market held in the Hall for Cornwall selling a variety of product from jewellery to second-hand books. The piazza often hosts marquees filled with local producers' stands and even international food festivals. Truro has a fascinating history: it was once an important port and tin mining centre. Tin was also brought to Truro to be tested and stamped. Truro's shipping trade was eventually lost to Falmouth. However, tin mining remained an important industry for Truro until the eighteenth century. In Norman times, a castle was constructed in Truro, but sadly none of it remains today. The city centre's buildings are either Georgian, Regency or Victorian. Many fine Georgian style houses can be seen along Lemon Street. At the top of Lemon Street is the Lander Memorial, erected in 1835 to commemorate the local Lander brothers, who discovered the source of the Nile. Truro became a Charter city in 1877, and in 1880, work began on the city's cathedral which took 30 yearsto construct. Parts of St Marys Chapel which is situated on the South East of the cathedral date back further than this and it is worth visiting to find out the full detailed history. The cathedral now dominates the city centre and hosts the Truro Cathedral Choir which is one of the best choral experiences in the country. If you have the time, why not explore the cathedral before Evensong which is held daily at 5.30pm and open for all (during term times). There are also two services on Sundays. There is a cafe "The Chapter House" which sells lunches and cream teas and a shop selling CDs of the choir as well as other Cornish bands, other Cornish memorabilia: jewellery, fudge etc, post cards, jams, religious objects etc. The Hall for Cornwall hosts all kinds of shows and performances, from opera and ballet to comedic performances and appearances by psychics. The Royal Cornwall Museum is home to many geological artefacts, including a genuine Egyptian mummy. Numerous exhibitions are run throughout the year, many displaying the work of local artists. Truro has two public parks; Victoria Gardens and Boscawen Park. Victoria Gardens has many exotic trees and plants as well as a bandstand, where live performances are held throughout the summer months. Boscawen Park has tennis courts and cricket and football pitches, as well as a children's play area and skate park. The city also has a ten pin bowling alley, a cinema, leisure centre, lawn bowling and other churches. There are countless cafes, restaurants and pubs in Truro. Truro is on the main train-line from Penzance and there are trains running daily towards Falmouth and Penzance.
