Mevagissey
Mevagissey is a pretty little fishing village which was once the centre of Cornwall's pilchard fishing industry. The harbour is still working to this day, albeit on a much smaller scale. The name Mevagissey is derived from the names of two saints; St Meva and St Issey. There is a ferry which takes visitors up to Fowey, and there are also fishing trips from the harbour. The streets of Mevagissey are very narrow and are packed with shops, cafes, galleries and pubs. There are also many restaurants, including several fish restaurants. The village has a Folk Museum and an aquarium in the old lifeboat house, as well as the 'World Of Model Railways'. There are many pleasant walks on the coastal path of this area, with far reaching views across St Austell Bay. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, with its sub-tropical plants, Jungle and Crystal Grotto, are nearby, as well as the impressive Eden Project. Feast Week is celebrated in Mevagissey at the end of each June, with street entertainment such as traditional folk music, gig racing and a Flora Dance through the streets.Read more on Stay Guide Cornwall
