Found in the beautiful St Ives Bay in West Cornwall and just 6 miles from St Ives itself is the popular town of Hayle. Boasting an estuary packed with wildlife, a pretty little harbour and over 3 miles of golden sandy beaches, Hayle is a fantastic location for families or those looking for the best that Cornwall has to offer.
Hayle’s beaches are consistently breath-taking with grassy sand dunes and jaw-dropping views across the water towards St Ives. Popular with surfers, wind-surfers and kite-surfers, the coast around Hayle is busy with those wanting to get in and on the water; just back from the beach, you will find some cute coffee shops and cafes serving ice creams, cream teas and all the beach accessories you would expect. Gwithian is one of Hayle’s bigger beaches, stretching across in one direction to Godrevy with it’s iconic lighthouse and right across in the other direction to Hayle estuary and harbour. For anyone bringing pets, just across the water at Hayle harbour, you will find the year-round, dog-friendly beach of Porthkidney (best accessed via nearby Lelant).
There are two very distinct hubs in Hayle, named the Copperhouse and Foundry areas. These names hark back to the industrial past of the town, when it was a thriving centre of activity during the industrial revolution. As a result of Hayle’s rich and varied history, the townscape and harbour areas have been granted World Heritage Site status. The town centre in Hayle is spread out with shops lining the main road through Hayle between Copperhouse and Foundry Square. There are numerous friendly pubs in Hayle, a fantastic choice of eateries and several worthwhile visitor attractions worth stopping by to see. The town offers great shopping options for all ages, with smaller independent shops, galleries and gift shops scattered amongst the usual supermarkets and high street names. Just outside Hayle, near the A30, you will find West Cornwall Retail Park that offers Next, Marks and Spencer, Boots and Costa Coffee.
