Porthleven
Porthleven is a working fishing harbour and village which faces southwest into the prevailing winds. During the winter, people come to the harbour to watch the storms and the waves crashing in. The village retains much of its traditional charm and character with its granite pier and clock tower. In 1811, the original harbour wall was built to provide refuge for ships in times of distress. The port was taken over by Harvey & Co. of Hayle in the 1850s, and major improvements to the harbour were carried out. The village has a wealth of amenities: - several inns: "Harbour Inn", "Ship Inn" and "Atlantic Inn"; galleries: ""Albatross Gallery", "The Customs House Gallery", "Fosspotz" and "Tessarae"; craft shops: "Creations"; cafes, bistros and restaurants: "Amelies at the Smokehouse", "Blue Haze Rest", "Chip Inn", "Kota", "The Lugger Restaurant", "The Copper Kettle", "The Corner Deli" and "Moonflower"; clothes and shopping venues: "Celtic Times", "Dockside Trading Company", The Vault", "WaterBorne Angling Centre"; necessities shops: "Boots"; a launderette; two mini supermarkets: "Costcutter" and "Premier"; Cornish food shops: "Horse and Jockey", "Quayside Fishmongers", "St. Keverne Bakery", a church and a fantastic cafe/ice cream parlour: "Naughty but Ice", all situated on the harbour-front. The beach is very popular with surfers and families (at low tide). The area is good for walking, as Porthleven is on the coastal path. The National Trust property "Penrose Estate" is en route from Helston and provides beautiful walks in the garden and through the woods to the village.Read more on Stay Guide Cornwall
