St Ives
St Ives is a beautiful fishing resort extremely popular with visitors and locals alike. It has been a busy fishing port since the middle ages, although the majority of the town's income is now provided by tourism. During the nineteenth century, the harbour was home to over 400 pilchard fishing boats, but today the harbour is not used to its full capacity. The historic fishing town of St Ives is the main holiday resort of the Lands End Peninsula and is home to the St Ives School of Painting. The town has five sandy beaches to choose from: Carbis Bay, St Ives Harbour, Porthmeor, Porthgwidden and Porthkidney. They are popular with both watersportsmen and families alike. Walking through the town's narrow and cobbled streets you will find galleries, craft shops, surf shops, many top quality cafes and restaurants, and artists' studios, as well as hundreds of fishermen's cottages. Make sure to visit The Barbara Hepworth museum and Sculpture Garden, The Penwith Gallery showcasing local artists the Tate Modern Gallery and Bernard Leach Pottery. St Ives has always attracted writers and artists: Virginia Woolf spent many childhood holidays here; D.H.Lawrence lived for a time in nearby Zennor and entertained other well-known writers of the day such as Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry. Turner painted a landscape in St Ives in 1811. Throughout the twentieth century, an artists’ colony flourished. Ben Nicholson, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon are just a few of the names of St Ives painters. Alfred Wallis lived here and is one of the best-known exponents of the primitive school.Read more on Stay Guide Cornwall
