Holiday Cottages in Truro

Truro is Cornwall’s only city and its administrative centre with the inevitable hubbub of shops, bars and eateries.

Truro has a fascinating history: it was once an important port and tin mining centre with tin being brought to Truro to be tested and stamped. Truro's shipping trade was eventually lost to the larger port at Falmouth, however, tin mining remained an important industry for Truro until the eighteenth century. Truro is mentioned and featured heavily in the BBC's drama series Poldark, though none of the filming was done in Truro itself. The city centre's buildings are mostly either Georgian, Regency or Victorian. Many fine Georgian style houses can be seen along Lemon Street. At the top of Lemon Street is the Lander Memorial, erected in 1835 to commemorate the local Lander brothers, who discovered the source of the Nile.

The skyline in Truro is dominated by the relatively young cathedral which towers above the lower roofs around the city. The cathedral is found in the centre of Truro, with a pretty cobbled area to the front that is popular with buskers and street performers. Entrance to the cathedral is free and once inside you will find a well-stocked refectory and gift shop.

On the main city’s piazza at Lemon Quay, you will find various high street shops aswell as the entrance to the Pannier Market where an abundance of fascinating objects can be found as well as groceries and other food stuffs, clothes and souvenirs. Just along from the Pannier Market, is the Hall for Cornwall, one of the main venues for larger theatre productions and shows. There is a regular flea market held in the Hall for Cornwall selling a variety of products from jewellery to vintage clothing, local art and second-hand books. Lemon Quay piazza often hosts marquees filled with local produce stands and international food festivals and is usually a good starting point for exploring this Cornish city.

On top of countless restaurants and pubs, Truro has a ten pin bowling alley, a cinema, leisure centre, lawn bowling and two pretty public gardens; Victoria Gardens and Boscawen Park. Victoria Gardens has many exotic trees and plants as well as a bandstand, where live performances are held throughout the summer months. Boscawen Park has tennis courts and cricket and football pitches, as well as a children's play area and skate park.
