After a busy start to the new year it can be really difficult to get back into the swing of things. We thought it would be handy to list a few ways in which you can make sure you hit the ground running in getting your holiday cottage ready for the upcoming season. We asked our Quality Assurance team to come up with a few ideas to get your season off to a flyer!

1. Temperature

During the colder climes at this time of year it is very important to check your boiler and heating are all in working order. A warm first impression will make all the difference to a happy guest. Leave the heating on a low temperature, even when unoccupied, will help ensure you avoid damp and mould issues. If your property is susceptible to damp, a dehumidifier in each room will absorb any moisture in the air.

2. Information packs

Now is the time to make sure that your guest information pack is up to date and ready for the new season. Giving your guest a lovely insight into the local area will help them make the most of their stay.

3. Welcome packs

Think about what you offer as a first impression to your guests, do you

want to go for a unique take on a Cornish cream tea welcome pack, just the key items or something a bit more luxurious? You could even tailor make your welcome pack for each guest; if you know you have a canine guest arriving you could throw in some indulgent dog treats or dog blanket – this will also encourage your guests to use the throw instead of allowing the dog on the sofa.

4. Linen and towels

If you supply it then make sure it’s not faded, torn, frayed or mismatched. The towels should be soft and fluffy and a bath sheet is always better than a bath towel.

5. Extras

Stock up on consumables, batteries and light bulbs. It may seem simple but TV remotes and lightbulbs have a habit of running out of juice when there’s no replacement.

6. Inventory

Check your inventory, from experience the following items are most often in need of a refresh:-

  • Crockery- make sure it matches, isn’t chipped and you have enough per person. Double the quantity is great to have as this reduces the strain on the dishwasher.
  • Cutlery- forks and teaspoons often need topping up.

  •  Non-stick frying pans often suffer- if the non-stick is compromised, replace. Likewise baking trays and roasting dishes may need to be looked at.
  • Check the first aid kit, the plasters often need a top up from time to time.
  • Wooden spoons absorb food colours and the utensil pot looks fresh with some new ones added.
  • Salt and pepper pots- check they are full and still work.

7. Air out the property

At the moment it may seem odd but come the summer months your guests will be grateful. Check the windows and doors are in working order. A fan can make all the difference in rooms that let in less natural air.

Get the garden ready for the upcoming season.

8. Garden

Get the garden and garden furniture ready for the season ahead. Cut the grass, prune the bushes, weed the garden and if necessary plant new plants. Make sure all garden furniture is clean and in a good, useable standard.   Remember, the outside is as important as the inside.

9. What next?

Look at your most common feedback for last year. There may be minor points that could ensure you get the season off to a flyer.
