  • “Wonderful place just to relax and take in the air of Cornwall.”

Our hosts were friendly but discreet and gave us some great suggestions of things to do. Only negative is the fridge had a bad smell from the previous occupant and the washing machine and dryer have seen better days. Even a quick wash took over an hour but they worked :) The kitchen was very well equipped if you want to stay in as we did and self cater and apart from the slight negatives mentioned that I would highly recommend staying here if you love peace and quiet and dark skies.

Many thanks for taking the time to give us feedback which is very valuable to us. We are sorry to hear that there was a smell from the fridge. Upon investigation nothing was found that might have caused this, however, a deep clean was carried out to ensure it was in perfect condition for the next guests. The washing machine has now been replaced as it was due an upgrade. The tumble the dryer has been serviced and is still in great condition. Owner relations

The property

Built in the early 19th century, the current house at Castle (a former medieval manor) has elegant, classical lines and gothic features.

Typical of a Cornish country house, it is built from local granite and is a very impressive sight as you approach it.

Once inside, you'll find a lovely, homely ambience where close attention has been paid to the decor and soft furnishings, including thermostatically controlled underfloor heating, an open fire, a contemporary, fitted kitchen and a state-of-the-art bathroom. You'll also have use of the extensive, and very impressive, gardens with a variety of large trees (Redwoods, Noble Fir, Beeches, Palms) and shrubs (the Rhododendrons, Camellias and Azaleas are particularly stunning) although you'll also be able to enjoy your own garden area with garden furniture and a barbecue.

About the location

LOSTWITHIEL

Bodmin 5.5 miles; Fowey 7 miles.

A delightfully peaceful country town, nestling in the Fowey river valley amid the woods and fields that characterise the area. Renowned as a centre for the antiques trade, there are several shops and dealers in the town, as well as a fine collection of country pubs, restaurants and a thriving farmer’s market. Lanhydrock House (NT) and gardens is just 3 miles away, while the fabulous Boconnoc House, Eden Project, shipwreck museum and tall ships harbour at Charlestown, and the picturesque fishing villages of Mevagissey, Fowey and Padstow, with the famous Rick Stein restaurants, are all within easy driving distance. The tumbling Atlantic surf, long sandy beaches and dramatic coastline of the north coast, including at the renowned Newquay, make for great days out and there is also chance to enjoy river canoeing, biking, hiking and leisurely walks in this lovely area. The friendly locals also have ongoing activities, such as the raft race, the famous tug of war, Carnival week and seagull outboard motor races. The river Fowey runs from the town on its 8 mile journey through the fields and wooded valleys to the gentler southern coast, a natural paradise for those who love the sea. Centrally placed, with much to do and see in the immediate area, Lostwithiel is the perfect choice for those seeking a break away from the hectic pace of the tourist resorts.

Note: There is a refundable good housekeeping bond of £100.
