“We have just returned from a lovely break in Portloe, the weather was fantastic and Hillside Cottage was perfect!”

A quintessential cornish cottage, beautifully decorated, light & airy and well equipped. A bottle of fizz & lemon drizzle cake was waiting for us on arrival ( a lovely touch). It's a very short walk The Ship Inn, with friendly staff & a nice garden. Also Lugger Hotel is nearby. Hopefully we'll be returning in August

“What a fabulous week we had in Hillside.”

The cottage is lovely, very comfortable and was the perfect place for our stay in Portloe. It is beautifully decorated with so many nice little touches which makes it really feel like a home from home. The welcome gift was delicious too!! The bedrooms were all very generous sizes with lots of space and storage. We hadn't noticed when booking that two of the bedrooms have sinks so that was a bonus for the teenagers. Downstairs is spacious with two reception rooms. The very comfortable sitting room was commandeered by the two eldest who lounged away on the huge corner sofa. The kitchen/dining room is a great communal space to gather and chat while preparing dinner. We were very lucky with the weather and had a great time exploring the area. A few places nearby we would recommend: - Towan Beach (national trust) stunning and dog friendly - Carne Beach - another stunning beach - dogs need to be on leads during the day until 6pm in summer months - Veryan village is lovely - very handy village stores/post office & pub - Melinsey Mill - cream teas and summer pizza nights (best to pre-book a table for pizza but worth it) - The Hidden Hut of course !! A must if you are in this part of Cornwall. Also look out for the Portloe village community shop on Wed & Sat (just next to the church). home made savory/sweet bakes, gifts, arts and crafts etc. Run by the villages so support them if you can :) Just a final word on the booking process through Sykes which was very smooth and great communication. Tony, the owner, also emailed us and he was extremely friendly and helpful if you have any questions about your stay. Thanks for sharing Hillside with us and for our stay in Portloe which was everything we wanted it to be. The Williams family - David, Laura, Olivia, Tom, Martha and Meg the working cocker who loves swimming !!!

“Very charming, clean and extremely well equipped cottage with many beautiful details in a picturesque small fishing village - we had a wonderful stay!”

The huge Smeg stove invited us to cook in the evenings, but the pub next door is also very nice (there is occassionally some noise from the pub´s extractor hood during the day that can be heard on the small terrace behind the house which we did not find disturbing at all).

“On arrival 7 lightbulbs were not working - had to call in a very helpful Jake who came that evening and then again the following day to resolve issue!”

Single beds had no towels - but pleased to see cupboard on landing was fully stocked so that we could help ourselves. Only 2 laundry bags for 5 people's bedlinen and towels. Paranoia over keeping the work surface free of water - hence indulgence in teatowels from said cupboard. Rather difficult to keep dogs downstairs when there was nowhere to lock them into the kitchen; also 'garden' up a steep flight of steps was disappointing - particularly for an elderly dog Too much tech stuff - heating difficult to manage and SMEG oven a challenge. TV remote not working. Don't like having to resort to a manual for every piece of equipment. Confusion over bin day - Friday or Monday conflicting information in household manual. Maybe change the cutlery!!!?

Thanks for your feedback. We always respond swiftly to any guests' concerns, which is why the light bulbs were replaced as soon as they were reported. We are delighted you had plenty of towels and tea towels for your requirements. However, we are sorry you had difficulty with the technology in the cottage. The SMEG oven is a standard model that many guests have delighted in using. The heating is operated from a straightforward tablet on the wall and the TV remote is working perfectly well. For any guests who experience issues with devices they are not familiar with, we offer clear operating guidance in the cottage welcome pack and also provide manuals for those who need a fuller explanation. We always go the extra mile to ensure holidaymakers have a lovely experience at Hillside which is why we welcome guests with a bottle of bubbles, a card, flowers and milk. Property Owner

“Hillside is a lovely, welcoming cottage.”

It is comfortable, beautifully appointed, has everything you could possibly need and easily accommodated 6 of us. The pretty village of Portloe, with its tiny harbour, is peaceful and friendly. We loved being next to the pub serving great Cornish beer and good food. We were easily able to step out onto the coast path and enjoyed swimming from the harbour and nearby beaches. There is so much to do and see in this beautiful part of Cornwall. We highly recommend; Hillside is a perfect cottage and we had an amazing holiday there!

“Lovely cottage, great location for exploring the idyllic but hilly coast path and away from the crowds.”

Perfect for a peaceful break & “switch off”. Portloe is a charming village with narrow streets and well kept properties. The small courtyard is great for breakfast on a sunny day, accessed via steep steps.. Kitchen fully equipped & Sonos system a great addition. Two bathrooms, nice roll top bath upstairs, shower is downstairs in a “functional” bathroom. Pub next door is handy with a nice beer garden but food is basic (everything with chips). Plenty of other food options in the local area though, some v high quality. Parking in village is a 5 min walk away.

“Hillside is a beautiful little cottage in a quaint old fishing village, it is perfectly equipped with everything you need for a holiday away from everything.”

We had a lovely time celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary and having the village pub next door was a bonus with plentiful food. We would not hesitate to recommend Sykes cottages or Hillside to anyone. Plus we had a nice welcome gift from Tony and Sue the owners. All in all first class!

“Fabulous equipment as we’re all keen cooks and loved the kitchen!”

especially the Smeg cooker and brilliant sharp knives — everything there was high quality - crockery (and plenty of it) etc etc Sitting room lovely and comfy to come back to after long walks and being out all day. Hillside is wonderful and very very spacious for 6 adults AND 2 dogs. The place was spotless so big thanks to your housekeeper. We loved it and all the touches - welcoming cake and fizz. “Lovely holiday cottage in peaceful location - great to be able to see the sea when sitting at the front of the cottage and friendly locals.”

Comfortable beds and loved the decor throughout. Only downside was the very steep steps to the terrace which we did not use as we had two small children. Overall would stay again once children were older

Kitchen very well equipped and with a lovely range cooker. The wood burner in the dining area was great on the cooler evenings. Bed huge and comfortable - best nights sleep we'd had in ages! Lots to see locally: gardens at Cearhays Castle and a tour of the castle recommended. Gardens at Trewithien likewise. Take a trip to St Mawes and take the ferry to Falmouth. There is plenty of cliff walks from the door step - all of which are worth doing for the views and flora & fauna. A great break away with friends and a lovely cottage. Many thanks

The property

Tucked away in the heart of Portloe, the Hillside is a cosy terrace cottage for families or friends in need of a relaxing holiday.

The interior is well-furnished with the living room boasting period features from wooden floorboards to window shutters and a lovely inglenook fireplace.

In the sitting room you’ll find a spacious ‘L’ shaped sofa and log burner which is welcoming after a long day out.

The country style kitchen offers a stunning range cooker and various integrated appliances that assist you through your stay.

The bedroom choices include a super-king size, king-size and twin all of which are comfortable enough so you can recharge for tomorrow's adventure.

Completing the interior is the vintage family bathroom which features a lovely roll top bath.

Moving outside, the rear of the property is where you’ll find a private terrace with a table and chairs and at the front of the house you’ll find a wooden bench; which is the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee with some harbour views.

Portloe welcomes many traditional pubs and Cornish cafes as well as a selection of mini independent shops.

Due to being situated in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula, there are plenty of cliff top walks and world famous beaches to take advantage of.

Down the coastline lies the award winning Gardens of Heligan and the tropical biomes of the Eden Project which makes this property an excellent choice for those wanting to explore some of Cornwall’s greatest attractions.

Further afield is famous seaside resort of Newquay and the cobbled city of Truro with both destinations offering a fantastic choice of amenities.

Often described as 'the jewel in the crown of the Roseland Peninsula', and rightfully so. Portloe is a very pretty, picturesque coastal village well-known for its fishing and walking opportunities. It boasts a delightful harbour with 3 working boats that go out to catch crab and lobster. Portloe was the filming location for a number of different films and TV series in the 20th century including the comedy series 'Wild West', featuring Dawn French and Catherine Tate. It is a small village with not much in terms of amenities, however it does have a very highly-rated food pub as well as a the Lugger Hotel with similarly positive reviews. Portloe proves itself to be a fantastic base for exploring some of Cornwall's most beautiful places. Truro, St. Austell and Newquay are all within easy reach, all with a fantastic choice of amenities and things to do. All three are well worth the visit whilst you're in this part of the country.
