John “The cottage is essentially charming, well located, grade 2 listed and has been thoughtfully modernised fairly recently.”
However we were disappointed with a general lack of care in management, maintenance and presentation, concerns reflected in other recent customer reviews. Wet soggy cardboard packaging for electric heaters still by the front door, Bins unemptied ( we bagged stuff up in black bin bags that we bought from the excellent local shop as they were not provided in the cottage, and tried our best to remedy this). However we were disappointed with a general lack of care in management, maintenance and presentation, concerns reflected in other recent customer reviews. The tatty outside needs decorating and tidying. Wet soggy cardboard packaging for electric heaters still by the front door, Bins unemptied ( we bagged stuff up in black bin bags that we bought from the excellent local shop as they were not provided in the cottage, and tried our best to remedy this). Outside courtesy light not working. Recycling brown bin full of disgusting, decaying rubbish, clearly unemptied for some time. Back of cottage in vicinity of key lock very neglected and generally tatty, unloved and untidy, posing a potential hazard for kids and pets. Inside, we were greeted with a disgusting bag of decaying food waste in the food recycling container atop the washing machine. The central heating for the cottage was turned off, presumably for ‘the summer’, which meant no heat in the bathroom and no heated towel rail to dry towels..and we had a few wet days! We had to rely on the 3 no.newly provided electric oil filled radiators, one of which we had to unpack and assemble ourselves! The wall between the bathroom and kitchen showed clear evidence of damp, including around the electric socket for the fridge. There was a cheap kettle, not the smart version shown in photos, and no toaster provided at all! In the lounge, there was no kindling or logs or matches provided for the wood burner, which we would have used given the cool few days we had… so the electric heaters were regularly needed. There was no torch or first aid kit. All in all, we felt very disappointed. We would strongly advise, and we have stayed in a fair few cottages over the years, that this cottage is overdue a Sykes inspection to check it’s quality and ensure it’s brought back up to standard.
