Avocado on toast in Cornwall

Cornwall is a fantastic destination for vegan, vegetarian and dairy-free visitors and it’s getting better all the time.

In North Cornwall there is a great selection, here we have listed some of our favourite vegan places to eat in Bude, Tintagel and the surrounding areas.

Vegan Bude

The vibrant and vegan-friendly town of Bude is on the A3073, off the A39, close to the Devon border. It is full of independent shops and close to wild beaches. There are plenty of council-run pay & display car parks.

Crooklets Beach Cafe

Vegans could begin their exploration of Bude with a cup of tea with soya milk, and a teacake with soya spread at Crooklets Beach Cafe. This beach cafe also serves vegan ice cream, a real surprise for a basic diner-style café.

Close to Crooklets Beach is the delightful Rosie’s Kitchen. This is a great spot for a vegan lunch or dinner, offering delicious vegan burgers and pizza. They even have vegan cheese!

The Shack

At lunchtime, a short walk to the edge of town takes you to a bar and restaurant called The Shack. The vegan dishes are labelled and include a pan-fried breakfast, chargrilled vegetable tasca sandwich, bean burger with guacamole and chocolate and ginger torte with ice cream. Highly recommended and also cater well for gluten-free diets.

Pengenna Pasties Bude

For vegan takeaway options, you couldn’t do better than Pengenna Pasties. This, and the Pengenna branch in Tintagel, is favourites of mine selling satisfyingly substantial vegan Cornish pasties, scones and sweet pastries. Bude Health Store and Holland & Barrett sell all the normal range of health food type vegan foods.

Vegan Tintagel

The village of Tintagel, on the rugged North Cornwall coast, is about 15 miles south of Bude. It’s a colourful place, renowned for its association with the legend of King Arthur, and attracts visitors from around the world. The old post office and historic castle are popular destinations. Nowadays vegans are well provided for here.

Charlie’s Cafe & Deli

A good place to start here is Charlie’s Cafe & Deli. Housed in a 14th-century cottage, this welcoming cafe offers vegan burger and chips, pizza with vegan cheese and suitable cakes. Soya milk and vegan spread are stocked. Gluten-free diets are well catered for. Vegan ingredients can be purchased in the attached deli.

Pengenna Pasties Tintagel

Pengenna Pasties as mentioned above have a takeaway here, with a café next door. It might be a good idea to stock up on vegan supplies here if you are venturing on one of the many walks around Tintagel. Be warned – this place is very popular so make sure you get there well before closing time to make sure they still have vegan pasties left (and especially if you’ve promised pasties to your loved ones).

Vegan Trebarwith Strand

The coastal path near here is stunning. One of my favourite walks starts from the centre of Tintagel village and follows the path a few miles to the small settlement of Trebarwith Strand (where there is a small pay and display car park and the pub has parking).

The Strand Cafe

The spectacular backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean is the setting of the Strand Cafe, which is just a few feet from the beach. Suitable dishes include excellent soup, homemade nut burgers and sometimes other things. Quite often they will have a vegan cake on offer but it may be best to call in advance. Soya milk drinks are available.

Port William

You can then spend hours relaxing on the golden sands overlooking Gull Rock. Just above the beach is the Port William pub with a cliff-top beer garden. This is a fantastic setting for watching the sunset. Inform the staff that you are vegan; there are usually a few suitable options such as soups, hummus platter, and chilli or curry and vegan-friendly chips.

Vegan Treknow

Michael House Guesthouse

The completely vegan Michael House Guesthouse is located in Treknow, a picturesque village between Tintagel and Trebarwith Strand, and an easy fifteen minutes walk from either. Non-residents can book a 2 or 3-course vegan evening meal with suitable wines and beers. I have always enjoyed meals at this place – the hosts are friendly and welcoming, and the home-cooked food is thoughtful and delicious. My choices include sushi or sweet corn fritters to start, a main of spice-crusted tofu with maple syrup & lemon glaze, followed by strawberries with hazelnut shortcake but there are dishes to suit all tastes. Meals are finished with a hot drink and chocolates.
