“No TV as advertised.”

..missed world cup final. Drive to property a nightmare. Cottage itself nice and clean but you did not specify no wifi, tv or the drive. Much worse was i received no response to any messages...not even a sorry about that. Don't expect any assistance, they'll leave it 2 days then say "still need us".

I'm very sorry to hear that the television wasn't working during your stay. There is a TV at the property, and unfortunately it appears it was not checked by our changeover team before your arrival. I completely understand how disappointing this must have been, especially as it meant you missed the World Cup Final. I'm also sorry to read that you felt your messages went unanswered. I've only just become aware of this through your review and am currently investigating what happened with our management team, as this is certainly not the level of service we expect. The property does not offer Wi-Fi, as stated in the listing. We have also updated the property description to make it clearer that access is via a quiet, single-track country lane with passing places, which may not be suitable for larger vehicles. “This is a magical setting, the long approach on a track and the narrow wooden bridge added to that for us, it would not be for everyone.”

The surrounding trees and vegetation are very unusual these days, and there are well marked paths in the woods, and a ferry to Calstock.We were delivered back to our jetty on request by a very personable ferryman. Cotehele and Buckland Abbey are good days out, and Tavistock is a lovely town. A few miles north and you are on Dartmoor. Our one criticism is the lack of comfortable seats in the lounge, the sofa is too wide and being leather, there is little chance of sitting comfortably. On arrival we found the top bathroom basin was leaking into the cupboard. We used a large pot to catch the water. The plumbing is what we would expect in a property of that age. Two bathrooms is much appreciated. The peace, surroundings and lack of WiFi are a real bonus.

“The house is beautifully located right on the River Tamar.”

The facilities (kitchen, bathroom, etc.) are perfect (and had apparently been partially renovated). There are beautiful walking trails right outside the house and the surroundings are quiet and relaxing. The drive to the house is adventurous and only recommended for confident drivers. Our stay was also enriched by our neighbor Frank: very nice, funny, and good conversation!

“We booked this property because of the direct access to the River Tamar so we could launch our paddle board and kayak.”

This is one of the reasons I rated it so highly. The jetty onto the river was a definite plus point. However, being a tidal river the lower the water the tricker it is to get into the river. The tides were kind to us and we had plenty of padding in both directions. The cottage was very well equipped and the top bedroom had a fantastic view, super comfy bed and ensuite. (We didn't use the other bedrooms so can't comment on comfort, but both had nice views). The garden is lovely especially the decking area with seating by the river - worth carrying your breakfast down there each morning. Neighbours were very friendly. Parking is just a short walk away along the lane but you can easily drop off near the cottage. We had a Skoda Kodiaq which managed to get down to the property but we had to pull in our wing mirrors at some points. The location of the cottage is quite remote if you don't want to negotiate the very narrow road and private driveway (see description and reviews). However you can walk up through the woods on a marked footpath (about 20-25 mins) to the nearest village (with shop) or to the train station to travel (once every two hours) over to Calstock (pubs but no shop). Torch needed for the evening journey home. Remote location means super quiet and peaceful. Do look at the location on Google Maps to get an idea of where you are and what's nearby. If you take provisions with you then you don't actually need to worry about leaving the property by car until you go home. No WiFi but we had good coverage on O2 on our mobiles. All in all a lovely place to stay so long as you are aware of all the details given about location and access. Great value for money for such a gem of a place.

“Lovely cottage warm and comfortable.”

Probably the best equipped kitchen we have stayed in. Lane was too rough for my car and i scraped bottom all along the last bit and by the turning area so tried to walk everywhere instead. It was a very wet week and the paths were very muddy but it was nice to get back to the nice warm cottage when soaking wet. Would highly recommend it and may try again when weather better.

“Lovely property, however the very narrow track leading down is about a mile long and across a very narrow bridge, about a foot either side of the car, as a result my parents didn’t want to go out in the evenings as they didn’t feel confident enough about the approach road in the dark.”

“We loved the property and location.”

No landline, wi-fi or mobile signal (EE) was not a problem for us, but I can see it may be for some visitors. Again, I had no problem with pictures on the wall that could be construed as celebrating blood sports; but there is one friend to whom I will not be recommending this cottage, solely for that reason. I have a fairly low car and the state of the track below the sleeper bridge meant that some scraping of the underside of the vehicle was inevitable - a slightly fuller warning about that part of the entrance would have been fair. Will we re-visit? Most certainly if the opportunity arises.

The garden is lovely and the views across the Tamar are beautiful. It is also an excellent location for touring round. Our only reservation is not about the cottage but the very narrow access, including an awkward wooden bridge. Nevertheless, a great place to stay.

“This cottage was close to civilization, being only a very short drive from Tavistock, but felt miles from anywhere - it was magical.”

That there was no passing traffic other than the occasional canoe made it feel really special, it was quiet, peaceful and out on the deck truly relaxing, watching the ebb and flow of the tide, listening to the birds. Walks from the door were easy and wonderful. The cottage itself was warm, clean and comfortable. There was plenty of room, a well equipped kitchen, everything worked, and we appreciated the supply of logs and kindling, all of us slept well in the comfy beds. There were no downsides but do take care with transport - the instructions are spot on, pay attention as anything bigger than a car (mine is a qashqai) will not make it over the bridge,

“A lovely cottage in an exquisite location.”

However the location does mean you are reliant on a car. My Ford Focus estate had no issues with the access track, but a van would be a bad idea. It does take quite a while to get anywhere from the cottage even with a car! If you don't have to, it's a very good place to do little. There are beautiful walks through the beech woods adjacent: we wandered to Bere Alston but note there's nowhere serving food in the village. We were welcomed into the pub with a selection from the co-op, which was enjoyable and saved us a hangry walk back to the cottage with the kids. Frank the neighbour was very friendly and happy to be bothered by our 5 year old into meeting his alligator and running around his palm trees. It's a lovely little cottage that is well tucked away and best suited to a quiet escape (would have been even better with your own kayak).

“Enchanting part of the world to spent time.”

Tuckermarsh, for us, was just what we needed to recharge the batteries and re-evaluate life. The cottage is picturesque, setting is beautiful on the banks of the Tamar. The garden affords a decking area to watch river life go by. Calstock is across the water with a front row seat to view the viaduct and the train (single track one an hour (ish) 2 carriages, nothing intrusive. The cottage itself is perfectly serviceable, having mod cons: dishwasher, washing machine, TV, shower, heating. Clean and tidy, decorated neutrally throughout. A very private setting, just three cottages huddled together, neighbours very friendly and helpful. Good walking from the cottage, train station 15min walk from the house. Plenty to do in this part of Devon, city, market towns, seaside, nature, walks, cycling, kayaking, National Trust type stuff, and plenty of stillness and beautiful scenery to wonder at. Private drive down to the cottage, car only, parking very near. And a drop off for/ turning area next to the cottages. We had a lovely holiday at Tuckermarsh, only thing I can think we needed, was a lemon squeezer! We coped, and will pack one for our next visit.

“Lovely little cottage, had everything we needed, for us it was a not a problem that there was no broadband or signal for the TV, as the setting, each other's company and the weather was wonderful.”

The jetty was a bonus sitting there of an evening watching the world and the tide go by. Nice little touch that there was milk in the fridge and a lovely little pack of luxury biscuits. Fitted kitchen was a great, bed was comfortable, place was clean and tidy throughout, although the previous guests had loaded the dishwasher with dirty plates etc and left it, which was unfortunate. great place to get away from it all. Also the neighbour next door was great and helpful for local information.

“Lovely cottage, well appointed, but they have clothes moths.”

It’s not pleasant to come home with a pest after the holidays. Also, the track to the cottage is a disaster. It’s so full of deep and large potholes, it’s impossible to pass without badly scraping the bottom of the car. They need filling urgently. Otherwise the cottage can only be recommended to people driving SUVs.

“The property is in a lovely setting by the river bank, however there is constant, noisy, large scale and ongoing earthwork digging taking place on the opposite bank of the river.”

The property itself has a good top floor double bedroom, the kitchen is new and the bathrooms are okay, the beds all seemed comfortable. We both felt that the whole cottage needed a freshening up and a deep clean. One of the single bedrooms has a light fitting in the ceiling that is completely exposed. Also the handrail in the main bathroom never switches off, and is beginning to show signs of burning the plastic that it is covered with. The night storage outside of the main bathroom was also constantly on. The living room is the most disappointing space in the cottage. The sofa is very uncomfortable, the upholstery needs a clean and the TV is extremely awkward to set up and run. Perhaps time for a quick trip to IKEA? The next door neighbour 'Frank', is very present at the property, shouting out questions and remarks to us, such as, "Good morning tourists", on the morning after our arrival. We live in an area popular with holiday makers and know this remark is not meant as a compliment. Frank also made a point of showing us what what his garden boundary, and what was not. The road to the property is tricky, definitely not for a large vehicle, and very potholed in the final stretch up to the parking point near the property. Beware the little wooden bridge you must cross to reach/ leave the parking space. Finally there is no tourist/ walking information to hand in the property itself, bring your own. We both felt that with a bit of TLC, this property could provide a much more welcoming experience.

All the furniture is of high quality (sofa is actually leather) all the room furniture is solid oak. The TV is not a problem and in the cupboard below is a stack of information leaflets on the area. The lighting does not have a shade but a special light bulb. We have recently fitted all new decking which is anti slip. For the first time ever, the cleaning company had not finished the making the beds when the guests arrived and I had to get them to return to the cottage while the guests were there. As an apology the owner of the cleaning company went down to the cottage within the hour of their arrival with two bottles of wine and a box of chocolates. As an added apology I arranged a meal at a local pub and put a voucher to the value of Â£40 behind the bar for them. They literally only had a hours wait before they could get into the cottage. Sorry, I dont own the property but feel this gives the wrong impression of what is an old miners cottage where we have tried to keep the authenticity. -- /With Kind Wishes/ /Lynn Property Owner

“The cottage is in a beautiful and very quiet position on the south (Devon) bank of the River Tamar.”

From the cottage itself there are views across to the village of Calstock (in Cornwall) and from the riverside the magnificent Calstock Viaduct. At the bottom of the garden there is an area of decking with two tables and four chairs perfect for breakfasts and afternoon tea or a sundowner. The track to the cottage is narrow with a tight bend but didn't cause us any issues. There is parking about 200m from the cottage and somewhere to unload about 50m from the cottage. There is lots of great walking in the area and Bere Alston Station is about 20 minute walk away (or 5 minutes drive) with trains to Plymouth and across the viaduct to Calstock and Gunnislake. From Calstock it is about a 30 minute walk to National Trust property of Cotehele and Cotehele Quay. Some points to note. The photos on the website are accurate for the bedrooms and the lounge. However, the kitchen is new and the bathroom has been redecorated and the website photos do not reflect this. The pictures of the garden show it tidy and sunny but in reality it is very overgrown and shady, particularly at the decking end. We believe these photos are about 13 years old and therefore misrepresent how the garden looks today. It is MUCH more mature now and the picture looking back to the cottages shows them in full view, whereas in reality you cannot see them at all from the same spot on the decking area. There is a leak (probably from the first floor bathroom) that drips through the ceiling onto the log burner, which needs attention, as does the blocked guttering above the front door. The new kitchen is very good but let itself down by the absence of some basics (corkscrew, kitchen scissors, wooden spoon, cheese grater, spatula, another sharp knife, washing up bowl) which could all be bought for £20. Some of these have been mentioned by previous guests but are still missing. There is a starter pack for the wood burning stove (kindling, paper and matches) but there was only one log.

“An absolutely stunning cottage.”

Better than in the photos. the photos on the website are showing the old kitchen and bathroom. two suggestions: 1. There needs to be a light above the hob because it is impossible to see the hob controls without a torch. 2. I hadn't realised there was no broadband at the property. my mistake. Also we are on EE and there is no signal inside the cottage. I found out that there is a good Vodafone signal and purchased a Vodaphone mobile Wifi hub which worked brilliantly. suggest you could install one of these on contract for £20 per month

“Tuckermarsh quay is the perfect getaway.”

It is remote but within touching distance of a village. If you want to walk to the local village you do have to be able to manage steep hills! But it is the most beautiful peaceful place ever. The cottage itself was clean and rustic with a helpful neighbour. The ducks come to chat whilst you sit on the jetty and when the tide is high there is a steady stream of canoes and boats passing by. The road leading to the cottage is narrow but if I can manage it then anyone can, but definitely not for big camper vans. I do recommend this cottage- but if you have young children, it could be a challenge.

“The cottage was exactly as described, very comfortable and generally very clean.”

The beds were very comfortable. The location is uniquely wonderful. The only down side was arriving on a wet and chilly late October evening to find that the storage heating had not been turned on, meaning a cold cottage for the first night, not great with young children. We turned to the log burner only to find that the expected supply of wood was entirely lacking, just a few logs left by the previous visitor. The log store was completely empty. Once the storage heaters were given time to do their thing, the cottage was cozy and welcoming, especially with the local friendly moggy glad to spend time with us. The drive is tricky but clearly explained and fine for an experienced driver in a reasonable size car.

“We have a Nissan Qashqai, negotiated the bridge ok, although there was a huge sigh of relief when round safely!”

A larger car would probably not be a good idea! Having said that, everything about this holiday was amazing. Lovely neighbours either side, beautiful scenery, super comfortable beds and everything supplied for our needs in the cottage. I've seen reviews about the shower...no problem whatsoever, lovely hot water whenever needed. We didn't have TV for a couple of days, which wasn't a problem, but we did get in touch with Lynn, who came down straight away. Thank you again, Lynn. You were so kind. No Wi-Fi in the house, but did get a signal just outside the door. My son went on a few walks from the cottage, but it wasn't suitable for my rubbish knees, although I did manage to get into the garden and sit by the river with the help of my walking poles.Be aware the steps to the garden are quite steep, so not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. The holiday highlights were visits to Castle Drogo, Fingle Bridge, Hexworthy Bridge and the nearby St Raphael's Church. Two Bridges for the best cream tea in Devon and a visit to Burgh Island is a must, although I was disappointed the tide was out , so no trip with the Sea Tractor (as featured in Poirot!) I cannot praise the Mary Tavy Inn enough. We went there twice for good food at a reasonable price and a very warm welcome. Incredible Dartmoor views in the garden. Another favourite is the Pannier Market in Tavistock where I buy my special glass pendants . A week is never long enough in this beautiful area!

“This is a fabulous cottage in a wonderful location.”

Beautifully clean, comfortable and well equipped. The road down is not for the faint hearted but you soon get used to it. We negotiated the bridge easily on the way down in a Kia Sportage but my husband had to see me across on the way back, due to the slight incline, as i couldnt see over the bonnet even with the seat up high. It was fine though, and it didnt stop us going out every day. There are plenty of passing places but we only met cars a couple of times. There is a good mobile phone connection and a lovely neighbour (Frank). I would highly recommend this cottage.

“WOW! What can I say, the cottage was even better than we were expecting.”

It was beautiful and in such a beautiful and peaceful setting. Anyone who likes walking would be in their elements. Direct from the cottage there are some lovely walks for all ages and abilities. A train ride from Bere Alston across to Calstock is a must. We had a lovely evening and meal in the Tamar Inn. A trip just down the road to Morwellham Quay is also a must. We will be going back!

Tuckermarsh Quay River Cottage 2 is one of a series of three river cottages built by miners and dating from the 1800s.

It is idyllically set amongst old English woodlands and is nestled in the Devonshire banks of the River Tamar looking out into Cornwall.

Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just 1.5 miles from the Devon village of Bere Alston, this riverside cottage has plenty of character with a stone fireplace and a woodburning stove.

The master bedroom at this Tuckermarsh cottage commands a magnificent view over the river and the surrounding countryside, whilst a single room commands the same view from a lower level.

A third single bedroom overlooks gardens and woodland.

Take a leisurely canoe trip downstream (canoe not provided) under the great viaduct and on past Calstock, then stop at Cotehele, a well-preserved medieval manor house with gardens and quay.

Alternatively, venture upriver to the beautifully restored ancient mining hamlet and quay of Morwellham, with its informative visitor attraction with rides deep into the mines.

From this Bere Alston cottage, networks of public footpaths enable walkers and birdwatchers to experience a sense of peace in beautiful natural surroundings, whilst just a short stroll downstream is a seasonal ferry across the river into Calstock.

Bere Alston is a small Devon village in a beautiful location between the rivers Tavy and Tamar, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village was once a thriving port shipping tin from Dartmoor. Just upstream from Bere Alston on the river Tamar is Morwellam Quay, a tiny harbour where half the world’s copper travelled through in the 1860s, and which is now a popular visitor attraction telling the story of copper mining through history. Trains run between Bere Alston and Plymouth, on the picturesque Tamar Valley line, following the river for much of the route. Bere Alston has a village shop and pub and there are plenty of stunning countryside walks. Two National Trust properties in the area are Cotehele, a Tudor manor house and glorious gardens stretching down to the river Tamar and Buckland Abbey, an estate on the river Tavy with craft workshops and family attractions.
