A selection of holiday properties in Padstow
Just across the Camel estuary from Rock is the pretty little fishing town of Padstow. During the 17th century, the mining and quarrying industry in this part of the world became more established, and Padstow transformed from a fishing port into a trading port. Copper ore was shipped to Bristol from the Camel quarry, for example. During the 19th century, Padstow prospered as the fishing industry peaked. The town's fishing industry still survives today, however its major source of income is now tourism. In 1899 the railway arrived at Padstow, marking the beginning of the town's tourism industry. A regular service aboard the Atlantic Express was established between Padstow and London, and the town has remained popular with tourists ever since. Today, Padstow epitomises the traditional Cornish fishing town, yet still caters perfectly for the modern tourist. The harbour offers pleasure boat trips, fishing trips and speedboat trips, and town has several art galleries, gift and craft shops, bookshops and a homemade fudge shop. Padstow has in recent years enjoyed increased publicity thanks to Rick Stein's restaurant, the Seafood Restaurant. Each May Day, Padstow celebrates with its Obby 'Oss festival. This marks the arrival of summer and originates from an ancient fertility rite. The highlight of the Obby 'Oss festival is when the 'Oss, a person dressed a horse, dances through the streets of Padstow. The horse's masked 'teasers' try to catch 'maidens' for the horse as they move through the town. At midnight, the Padstow people sing about the death of the Obby 'Oss and its resurrection the following year.Read more on Stay Guide Cornwall
