“The Good, the Bad, and the Annoying – The Good The property is an excellent size, and the layout is very practical and comfortable.”

It was well equipped and presented in a clean condition on arrival. We particularly appreciated the location, especially its proximity to the beach, and eventually even grew accustomed to the steep hill. The Bad Upon arrival, we noticed water pouring from the overflow pipe near the roof. We later realised this was very hot water coming from the boiler. When we opened the back door, we were met with a strong musty and damp smell, particularly noticeable in the kitchen and living room. Despite airing the property throughout the week and purchasing air fresheners, the odour persisted for the duration of our stay. Additionally, pots, pans, dishes, and plates stored in the lower kitchen cupboards all required washing before use due to the musty smell. This made spending time indoors uncomfortable and detracted from the welcoming feel of the house. There are visible signs of previous damp issues both downstairs and in the bedrooms. It is unclear whether these have been fully treated or whether the property simply requires more regular airing or the use of dehumidifiers. The overflow continued to release hot water every 20–30 minutes, resulting in a large puddle forming outside the kitchen window. We found that turning on the radiators helped relieve pressure on the boiler and reduced the overflow, but the radiators in the living and dining rooms did not function despite adjusting the thermostatic valves. As a result, even when the outside temperature was 20–22 degrees, we had radiators running inside the house. The Annoying The blinds in the small dining room fell down twice while being opened or closed, and we eventually avoided using them for fear of further damage. The blinds in the bedrooms frequently caught on the window handles, causing the fasteners on the back to pop off. This left the blinds either lopsided or unable to close properly, requiring repeated fixes throughout the week. The garden had not been cut, and the outdoor seating appeared dated and unstable, leaving us unsure whether it could safely support four people. This meant we were unable to make use of the outdoor space. Recommendation Would I recommend Tregrundy Farmhouse? At this moment, unfortunately not. However, if the damp/smell issues are addressed and the maintenance concerns resolved, it has the potential to be a very enjoyable place to stay.

About the location

PERRANPORTH

Newquay 9 miles; Truro 9.5 miles.

Perranporth, a beautiful Cornish coastal town, lies in the heart of Poldark Country, the setting for the novels of Winston Graham who lived in Perranporth in the 1930s. Perranporth offers plenty of traditional pubs and shops, plus a classic bucket-and-spade beach that is lifeguarded in summer, overlooked by craggy rocks and a wonderful coastal path. Once known as the source of the finest tin, the community still retains reminders of the rich heritage with abandoned pump houses, mine shafts and workers’ cottages. The local Blue Hills Museum and Perranzabuloe Folk Museum are both well worth a visit to understand the fascinating history of this coastal area. Further afield are the miles of sandy beaches at Crantock and Holywell Bay, and the breathtaking coastal walks around St Agnes, much of it owned by the National Trust. A perfect holiday base in Cornwall, with an abundance of activities to suit everyone.
