Driftwood

This was our first time renting in Newquay and our overall experience was fantastic.

There were however some negatives to consider. On arrival the general site was looking somewhat tired and unloved with the outer entrance to the ‘Driftwood’ apartment itself a little underwhelming. Access to the property from the parking area and its internal layout would cause anyone with even basic mobility issues a problem and I would suggest looking at alternative options. The apartment itself sits within a larger complex of buildings on the site of a disused hotel that at the time of our visit was undergoing renovation. Driftwood (number 7) is built on several different levels and appears to occupy the space directly above number 6. I am unsure about the ownership situation of all the properties on the site but we saw a number of people moving in and out during our stay. At the time of our visit four younger males checked in to number 6 for two or three nights and while in the main they were pretty respectful they did get a bit loud between midnight and three am so we weren’t too unhappy to see the back of them. On that point this is not meant to be a criticism of this property it’s merely an observation of our personal experience and can happen at any hotel or multi occupancy rental property where individuals interpretation of reasonable behaviour can vary. Now to the positives of which there are many. The property is spacious and fitted to a high standard. Two large double bedrooms with en suite facilities, a large separate bathroom, a large well appointed kitchen and a large living area with TV, WiFi and a small balcony overlooking the most fantastic sea and bay view. We loved just sitting there with a drink watching the sun set and the tide roll in and out, truly magical! Driftwood is located in the Lusty Glaze area of Newquay which is approximately one mile from the centre of the town. The nearby beaches of Lusty Glaze, Tolcarne and Porth are to die for but the first two in particular can only be accessed on foot via long steep descents down stairs from the headland which again would be a non starter for anyone with mobility issues. We loved the beach bars down there and the Colonial bar & restaurant at Tolcarne is a must visit. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Driftwood and felt it represented excellent value for money.
