“The reviews that we had read prior to booking were accurate.”

The bad points were: the incredibly overgrown garden and patio, front and back, a real mess so we couldn't use them at all; the house could have been cleaner particularly the kitchen utensils and it needs more crockery; the stairs (lots of quirky steps in and out of bathrooms) are very steep and should be highlighted in the description; all the furnishings and ornaments/artworks are very old and tatty, looks like a bunch of things that no one wanted. The kitchen island is absolutely huge to the point of making it difficult to move around when preparing food and the various utility rooms are full of junk. The good points were the location, and that's what you pay for - to be in the central village square walking distance from everything; the beds are very comfortable and the showers all work very well. I've used Sykes for years to book cottages and loved them all. This is the first time I felt the need to review one (negatively) - a prime location should not be an excuse to charge such a high rental when the house is not maintained properly.

The property

Commanding superb sea views from the top of the village square, Dormer Villas is a stone's throw from the sandy cove at Portscatho and the picturesque harbour, on the exclusive and desirable Roseland Peninsula.

An area of outstanding natural beauty, discover the diversity of secluded coves, wooded countryside, fishing villages and scenic cliffs. The town of St Mawes, with harbour overlooking the River Fal and dramatic coastline, has two southerly facing bathing beaches.

The Tudor architecture of St Mawes Castle, built in the reign of Henry VII is a worthy sight.

Hop on the King Harry ferry across the River Fal and discover Falmouth, with four beaches arcing golden sands, Pendennis Castle, and the art and craft galleries, traditional inns and shops.

Explore St Just Roseland with its market square attractions including the 15th century parish church. The house has a spacious ambiance, with three bedrooms boasting superb, elevated sea views across to Nare Head and Gull Rock.

A former Sea Captains house, this property has a large comfortable living room with open fire and a family dining room with a multi-fuel burning stove.

The kitchen is well appointed with a central island.

Two of the bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms, with additional bathroom with indulgent roll-top bath.

The sheltered enclosed garden with pretty lawn and flower borders (please supervise children in the vicinity of the pond) is an absolute suntrap ideal for lazy breakfasts and barbecues.

About the location

PORTSCATHO

St Mawes 5 miles ; Truro 15 miles ; Mevagissey 13 miles

Once an important pilchard-fishing village, today Portscatho is a popular holiday destination for those seeking a traditional seaside location. Brimming with Cornish charm, there is a sandy beach and a harbour, as well as a pub, a butcher’s, a greengrocer’s and a handful of gift shops and galleries. The coastline here is most scenic, with hidden coves, secret beaches and mile upon mile of undulating coastal footpath. The village of Gerrans is just a short stroll along the shore, and the beautiful Porthcurnick beach is also accessible via the coast path from Porthscatho. Portscatho offers a holiday away from it all, with a welcoming community spirit and several annual events which everyone gets involved with – including the fish festival each August.

Note: There is a pond in the garden, please supervise children. Note: Check in time for this property is 4pm.
