    “The listing wasn’t as accurate as it could have been.”

    The garden was very small compared to the photos. There was also a lack of information about the property which you normally get when staying. It would have been nice to have a local guide for places to visit and pubs recommended by the hosts and other guests. The listing also said there would be dog towels and bowls, which there weren’t. There was a washing machine and dryer in an outbuilding, but no drying rack was supplied in the property. The beds were comfortable, but they had a plastic ...

It would have been nice to have a local guide for places to visit and pubs recommended by the hosts and other guests. The listing also said there would be dog towels and bowls, which there weren’t. There was a washing machine and dryer in an outbuilding, but no drying rack was supplied in the property. The beds were comfortable, but they had a plastic cover underneath which made them very hot, not helped by the beautiful weather we had during our stay, but I am not complaining! The kitchen was well equipped. The bathrooms need some TLC. The extractor didn’t work and the skylight was too high to open. This is causing some mould and a damp smell. The water pressure is also very temperamental. The location is wonderful with a beautiful view over St Austell. It was a perfect location to explore the Clay Trails, but the flies were a nightmare, so make sure you take insect repellent if going during the summer. The cream tea on arrival was a lovely gesture. With a little more TLC and some finishing touches, this would be an excellent cottage. I would suggest a guest book too so that others can get some inspiration for things to do in the local area.

The property

The sweeping view of blue horizon at St Austell Bay from this beautiful converted barn is a constant reminder that Cornwall's Riviera coastline and golden beaches are not far away.

Nestled slightly inland amidst scenic countryside on a working farm in the hamlet of Trethurgy, Black Rock combines excellent accommodation standards with a peaceful setting for a relaxing break yet is a short drive to the long sandy beaches at Pentewen, Porthpean and Par (dog-friendly) and some of the county's major tourist attractions.

Well placed for a varied holiday experience, the renowned Eden Project is within walking distance; Charlestown, famous for its collection of tall ships, is a 15 minute drive whilst the exclusive waterfront town of Fowey; the cathedral city of Truro and the charming fishing village of Mevagissey are a 30 minute drive.

Guests can end fun days on the coast with a soak in their own wood fired hot tub; a sun-downer on the sheltered decked patio or beside the warming glow of the stylish wood burner in the cooler months.

The interior has rustic appeal with an ultra-glossy kitchen and two luxurious en-suite bathrooms adding a touch of glamour. Pet owners, walkers and cyclists will discover scenic walks and cycle routes of the Clay Trails from the front door step and children will love to meet the resident chickens, ducks, geese and pigs.

It is ideal for larger groups when booked with the attached residence, Leghorn , which can accommodate four guests.

Within walking distance is the Knightor Winery & Restaurant and St Austell offers excellent wet weather alternatives including a cinema, ten pin bowling and indoor children's adventure centre.

The old market town of St Austell, just a mile or two from the south coast, is famous as the historic centre of the china clay mining industry. Today, its many beaches and its sub-tropical gardens provide plenty to see and do. The wonderful Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are perfect for a family day out, and a little further afield Caerhays Castle provides a stunning backdrop to Porthluny Cove. On the edge of town, St Austell Brewery offers tours of the Victorian brewing equipment and a chance to sample the local beer, and for those looking for surf and sand, St Austell Bay has several beaches to choose from - Porthpean, Carlyon Bay, Pentewan, Polkerris - the last offering a variety of water-sports. As well as a small shingle beach, Charlestown, a pretty, historic port, often has wooden sailing ships in the harbour, and is popular as a film location. A little further afield are Fowey and its beautiful estuary to the east and the fishing port of Mevagissey to the west. With lots to do and something to keep the whole family entertained, St Austell is a great year-round destination.
