“I booked this accommodation as I was looking for an accessible place as I’m a full-time wheelchair user.”

The description sounded fantastic but in reality it was so much better. This review will be mainly disability related but it is amazing either way. The description sounded fantastic but in reality it was so much better. The accommodation was just so luxurious, when booking for holiday places I expect them to be nice but this was way above that expectation. This review will be mainly disability related but it is amazing either way. The accommodation has a single parking space right outside the front door (it took us a couple of times to get in a right spot to allow me to transfer from the car into my wheelchair) from here the front door is plenty wide enough for my wheelchair to get through and unless you have a very big electric chair I can’t imagine there would be an issue getting in. From the front door you are immediately in an area for shoes, coats, beach things etc and to the right there is a toilet and sink, I used this to store my triride so I didn’t take any mess into the main house. From there there is another door into the open lounge, dining and kitchen which was so big and light and so thoughtfully done. The lounge had a lovely sofa (it was too low for me bur my PA said it was very comfy. Opposite the sofa was a tv with regular stations plus streaming channels. There was then a beautiful dining table which was wood with epoxy running through the centre, what I really liked was that it was high enough so that my legs and chair both fired under so I could get right under. There was enough space around the table to comfortably fir 6. The kitchen was to die for and so thoughtfully designed. There was a full size fridge freezer and then an integrated fridge and freezer that I could reach. It had a regular hight oven and then a lower one which also had a tuck in door so that I could access the oven. The hob was an induction one which was so safe for me to use. There were many cupboards up high but also many more lower down so I didn’t need to keep asking for help. It is fully equipped and even had some lightweight plastic cups, bowls and spoons (I’d still take your own if you need something very specialised) The highlight of the kitchen for us was the tap, in one of two sinks, was one that provided boiling water, cold water, as well as regular hot and cold and then much to my delight soda water! Immediate tea and coffee! No waiting for the kettle! There was also a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. One thing we really loved was that the owners and manager were very into recycling and use of eco friendly products around the house and using locally made items such as soap etc. Two bedrooms went off this area. All 3 single beds were adjustable and I had asked for a bed rail to be in my room (there was only one available). The bedrooms were both a very good size so all disability equipment such as wheelchairs, powerchairs, walking frames etc can easily fit around with no problem. There were sets of drawers in each bedroom but no wardrobes (to allow more space) there were however coat stands and on the back of the bedroom doors there were sets of pull out hooks to hang clothes (bring some hangers). In each bedroom there was a sofa and the larger room had a wonderful full size beanbag (if only I had a hoist I would definitely be on there!). The bedrooms were both carpeted and had rugs down but they were easy to roll up and put away if they were a trip hazard or made wheeling over difficult. Each room had double patio doors that opened out onto the garden. Each door had a bottom lip of about 7-10cm which was easy to get up and I can’t imagine any wheelchair of any type struggling to get up. Both bedrooms had an en-suite wet room and in mine there was a shower chair/ commode/ over toilet chair (this wasn’t self propelling but I managed to pull myself around, it had locks which were the type that had to be pushed down to activate, it also had footrests, the arm rests were removable to transfer if needed., the commode pan could be removed to use over toilet or shower, there was no belt but I took mine and it fitted easily. The sink in each wetroom was lowered but because of the style it meant that my knees couldn’t fit under so I had to lean right over to clean my teeth. To note when using the shower chair in the smaller room, because of the way the drain had been placed and the size of the shower area, a few times a had a feeling of tipping when the wheel lifted off of the floor camber but if I were to visit again then I would use the bigger wetroom and this wouldn’t be an issue. There was also a frame around the toilet if needed to assist with sitting and standing. Outside there is a lovely garden all of it being accessible, there is a patio area with table and chairs, a washing line, a path around the whole house, and an area of grass which my assistance dog appreciated very much! There is also a hot and cold shower outside which we used several times when my bike attachment, my wheelchair and my dog all got muddy and sandy. When we arrived we had been left a really sweet hamper of tea, coffee, sugar, bread, cream tea, eggs milk and oat milk which was very much appreciated after our long drive. The lady that manages the accommodation was so lovely and welcoming, she left a file of everything about the place and the equipment. On the whole this was the most accessible holiday accommodation I’ve ever used and it has been done so tastefully making sure it doesn’t look too clinical and that anybody could hire it without it being obviously designed for somebody with a disability. We”d like to thank the owners for doing such a fantastic job renovating it and hiring it out. To Ali we’d like to thank her for keeping it so clean, comfy and making such an effort with us and the space, including the eco friendlyness- we even bought our own non bleached loo roll but didn’t need it!

The property

Hilbre, a pleasing ground-floor apartment resting in the village of Trevone, in Cornwall.

This disability-friendly abode boasts off-road parking, an outdoor shower and proximity to the beach, making it a lovely base for small families or a group of friends exploring the coast of Cornwall.

Hilbre’s spacious layout and thoughtful design have been praised by guests for creating a sense of freedom and inclusion—whether relaxing in the heart of the living space, moving easily throughout the home in a wheelchair, or adjusting the bed for personalised comfort.

Pull into the private driveway and step out into the fresh Cornish air, where the sound of the sea lingers nearby.

The front entrance to Hilbre is the narrowest access point, but still wide enough for most wheelchairs.

Two additional entrances feature double doors opening onto the patio, offering ample space for even the largest wheelchairs.

A paved path runs all the way around the house back to the parking area, allowing wheelchair users to explore the entire exterior with ease.

As you enter Hilbre, a welcoming hallway greets you with bench seating, coat hooks and space to kick off your shoes—setting the tone for a relaxed and well-thought-out stay.

Underfoot, underfloor heating warms each step as you move into the open-plan living space, where wooden flooring and natural light create a bright and inviting atmosphere.

Heated towel rails with a boost function add extra warmth to the underfloor heating, while heated mirrors provide a useful anti-mist feature—particularly handy for wheelchair users who may find them difficult to reach.

Light switches are also positioned within easy reach throughout.

The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering, with everything you need to whip up a hearty breakfast or a seafood supper.

Reach for the kettle to brew a morning cuppa, toast fresh bread in the toaster, or rinse some fresh fruit in the sink.

The oven and hob, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher are all tucked neatly into the layout, making cooking and clearing up a breeze.

In addition, the kitchen includes an extra oven with a slide-away door, a lowered work surface, and ample ground-level storage—making it easy for wheelchair users to join in the cooking.

Hooks, drawers, cupboards and switches are thoughtfully positioned at both accessible and standard heights.

The wheelchair-friendly workstation sits at the heart of the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area, allowing everyone to stay connected and involved.

Slide into the booth-style corner seating in the dining area or pull out a chair to enjoy meals together, with a wall-mounted Smart TV positioned perfectly for viewing from both the dining and sitting areas.

After a day on the beach, lounge in the sitting area with a book or a board game, or simply unwind with a film.

A workspace is tucked into the corner for those needing to check in with work or plan the next day’s adventures.

The twin bedroom offers soft carpet underfoot and enough space for wheelchair access, with a sofa to sink into and direct access to the rear garden—ideal for stepping out into the morning sun.

The single bedroom features an armchair and an optional eco-friendly spare bed, designed as a durable and sustainable ‘room in a box’ made from high-quality cardboard that, despite being lightweight, has a high load-bearing capacity.

The main Komfortlift electric profiling bed in this room has all the functionality of a hospital bed (without full forward tilt) and is electronically adjustable using an easy-to-use handset—raising to waist height and allowing the head and foot sections to move independently.

It features a deep memory foam mattress for added comfort, and a small removable handrail can be fitted to the side for extra support.

The base is designed to accommodate a hoist if raised slightly, giving carers flexibility when assisting guests.

Guests should bring their own hoist, as this allows carers to use familiar equipment safely.

This spacious room offers comfort and independence, while the larger double room provides a welcoming retreat for accompanying family or friends.

Both bedrooms include en-suite shower rooms with level basins, walk-in showers and WCs, designed with accessibility in mind.

A freestanding frame can also be positioned around the toilets as an alternative support if preferred.

These bathrooms also feature lowered basins and mirrors, easy-use lever taps, and safety bars for the showers and bath.

A commode and shower chair are available on request.

A separate cloakroom adds further convenience, though this WC off the hall is too small for wheelchair access.

Outside, rinse off sea salt under the outdoor shower at the front, or enjoy alfresco drinks on the rear patio, surrounded by the peaceful hum of Trevone village.

Just a short stroll from the beach, Hilbre is well-placed for exploring the local area.

The nearby shop and pub are within easy reach, while the harbour town of Padstow is a short drive away, offering mouth-watering seafood, scenic boat trips and the popular Camel Trail.

Hilbre is a delightful base for discovering the beauty and charm of the Cornish coast.

Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1189845, together sleeping up to 5 guests.
