“This property really is home from home.”

It has everything you could possibly need and more. The interior is done to a very high standard, and everything seems to have an touch of luxury to it. There are lots of books, games, jigsaws, as well as the games room that has pool, darts, table tennis and more. Altho this property is in a very remote area, the close proximity to the A30 meant getting around was really easy. We love this hidden gem and can't wait to return.

“We arrived a bit earlier than expected & bumped into Maureen, who had just finished getting the cottage ready.”

She was lovely, friendly & gave a good run down of things & places to visit, a real gem. What a delightful, picturesque cottage, very clean, cosy & spacious at the same time. Very greatful for the welcome gift of fresh scones, cream & jam. Plus the dog treats. All the amenities needed & compfy beds with crisp good quality bedding. Games room is great with a good selection on hand, but the enclosed fully secure garden with attached field was fantastic for our 3 dogs. We probably picked the wettest week on record, but still managed to visit some great places, including Coniston Lake, The Cheese Ring, Daymer Beach & Davidstow Air Field. But on the worst days we could still exercise the dogs (2 german shepherds & a Scottie) in the attached field. They absolutely loved it & it was great to release that pent up energy prior to going on visits, especially if you have nervous/reactive dogs. We purposely chose bonfire week to escape the fireworks, due to our Scottie being extremely nervous of them. So for anyone struggling to have a holiday with a reactive/nervous dog, this place would be ideal with your own private secured field.....heaven. We have been staying in cottages up & down the country 2/3 times a year, for the last 10 years. This is by far one of the tops. Very unusual to find a games room & secure dog field that isn't a shared facility. We will be back x

“Thank you for the welcome pack, much appreciated.”

However, a list of improvements need to be addressed. Immediately as we entered the property, we both noticed a horrible fusty, damp, musty smell. This was evident in all the bedrooms and o dear, the storage cupboards in the kitchen made us both heave. Towels definitely need to be replaced/renewed. We were under the impression that the few Towels that were supplied were in fact dog towels. We used them reluctantly until we purchased our own the first opportunity we had. Tea cloths and dish cloths were also badly stained and need throwing away. Lack of toilet rolls were not acceptable, we have never been to any holiday cottages before and had to take our own or, as was suggested by the neighbour, we could have tesco delivery!!! Dishwasher tablets were also not provided. Again the neighbour said there were 2 provided by the sink. Two???? For a week??? Are we not meant to wash the dishes every day? We were in doubt whether they were in fact dishwasher tablets or not, more like washing machine tablets, which incidentally, I do not wash clothes on holiday but that is my preference. The table mats were disgusting. Every mat had the outer surface peeling off, hardly hygienic. As for open views all around......hardly appealing to be looking out on to a derelict, dilapidated barn on one side and trees blocking the view from the conservatory. We asked for directions from a local when we first arrived and was told it was opposite the scrap yard farm, very off putting. I appreciate that the barn view is out of your control, but Sykes need to visit to update their description and rating of the property. Shower could benefit from a good clean and scrub down around the runners at the bottom of the shower tray. All in all, we left early, only stayed 5n which made the holiday more expensive, which we were not happy with. Would we visit again........No!

We are sorry that the property was not to your liking. We normally provide toilet rolls and brand new dishcloths at the start of each holiday let. Also we provide two towels, freshly laundered, for each paying guest. Had you felt that was inadequate you could have contacted us, the owners, or the housekeeper, and we would have been happy to provide more. You complained about the "disgusting" table mats. There was a full set of almost brand new table mats in the drawer next to the old ones. We kept some old ones so guests could bring hot dishes from the oven to the table without fear of causing damage to the "good" mats. The detergent tablets provided were for the dishwasher and not the washing machine, as you suggested. There are no trees whatsoever on our property blocking the view from the conservatory; there are some trees at the far end of the adjacent farmer's field, but they do not block the view of the East Moor, over 3 km away. We cannot of course be responsible for the view of our neighbours' properties, which in any case are not in direct line of sight from the conservatory. We have taken on board your comments about the cleanliness of the cupboards and the shower. We have been receiving paying guests for over six years now and have never had comments quite like like this before. Our housekeeper, who has been with us for all that time, is naturally upset that you felt that cleanliness was not up to expectations. Property Owner

With its enclosed garden and field it's perfect for our two dogs and with Bodmin moor only a few hundred yards walk away there is no shortage of opportunities for walking. The cottage itself is well equiped and very cosy and is a perfect home from home.

“Absolutely lovely stay.”

Everything throughout the house had been well thought out. Kids loved the games room (so did the adults to be fair haha!) lots of board games too which was great for the evenings. Kitchen was very well equipped. Maureen was lovely and very helpful with any issues. The cream tea was an unexpected and lovely surprise too. The only thing we would say is it really could do with a second toilet but that didn’t stop us having a lovely time.

“What a lovely place a credit to the owner.”

We sold our touring caravan and decided to book here to escape hustle and bustle. This was a perfect retreat. First time in years we came home rested. The beds are super comfy and the bedding smelt like summer, clean and fresh. The fittings were quality and the garden super safe for the dogs. Well thought out and fenced off even under the gate. I cannot thank you enough for a super clean property and was sad to leave. Another point I would like to make is, you would never believe dogs are allowed to stop here not a hint of a dog left behind but I am grateful that you allow them. Thank you.

“Lovely comfortable cottage, spotlessly clean and had everything we needed.”

Think sofas have been changed from pictures on website and have higher backs so very comfortable. Perfect garden and field for dogs, food at Kings Head was lovely and very near A30 so easy to get everywhere, Daymer beach, as recommended by Maureen was our favorite. We hope to be back next year

“For us the main issue was space.”

With 3 dogs and 2 children we were on top of each other a lot. The door to the back garden was blocked off by the sofa so you either walked all the way round or had to pull the sofa out which wasn’t really anyone’s fault as there was no space for it anywhere else but it was a negative for us. We also had issues with the shower pressure and lack of hot water. The pool table jammed up on the last night which was reported to the owners. Despite this the kitchen was well equipped and the oven was great. The beds were super super comfy. The games room was great and we used the outside space a lot. There was lots of little touches. Scones, clotted cream and milk left for arrival and Easter eggs for the children. Overall we had a good stay but we don’t think it will be a property we return too.

We are glad that you enjoyed using the games room - the pool table return has been unblocked. The guest information explains that the water pressure can be low on occasions (this has been reported to South West Water by most of the village recently, so we are hopeful that they may improve it in due course). “It was a lovely place except for some small, niggling things.”

The toilet seat was loose and every time you sat on it it moved. I tightened it up as best I could. The hot water tap in the bathroom was loose and kept swivelling around when turning on and off, again tightened this up as best as i could. The main bedroom window facing the games room has a major water leak coming through the air vent (we had very bad weather) and saturated the window sill, good job I didn't put anything on there. The grill on the oven doesn't work. Tried to grill something on maximum temperature and it barely got warm. The shower doors do not meet in the middle when closed no matter how hard I tried resulting in a nice puddle of water on the bathroom floor every shower. The washing up bowl had a hairline crack in it and would loose most of the water before the washing up was finished. I did tell the owner about this and she promised to get a new bowl. The water pressure in the property is poor but there is a note saying that this could be the case due to several properties sharing the same water. It takes ages to fill the bath up.

We are very sorry that these things affected your stay. We normally fix anything straight way if it is reported to us; our neighbour does the maintenance for us and is always happy to come round to sort out any problems as soon as possible. However, following your feedback, we have replaced the toilet seat, taps and shower enclosure in the bathroom so that these issues should not arise again. The guest information explains that the water pressure can be low on occasions (this has been reported to South West Water by most of the village recently, so we are hopeful that they may improve it in due course). We have checked the grill and it is working correctly. Unfortunately if there is horizontal rain, it can enter via the air vents if they are left open, so they need to be closed in bad weather. “Would have been handy to have a vacuum cleaner just so we could have gave it a clean up before we left, I know it said that we don't have to clean after ourselves.”

“A superb property, in a beautiful location and extremely well equipped.”

“In general the accommodation was just as expected and suited our purposes but with a couple of suggestions.”

Firstly, there was just two of us and two dogs, We wondered how people managed when the property was let for the maximum of 6 regarding the use of just one bathroom. Secondly, we found the accommodation very comfortable and the garden space fully enclosed and dog friendly. However it would have been even more comfortable for us if there had been another armchair in the sunroom. Otherwise all good.

“We really enjoyed staying at Jolls Barn Cottage and as a dog owner we found this property to be one of the best if not the best we have stayed in as it was very secure so we didn’t have to worry about our dogs (3 German shepherds) The cottage was equiped like a home.”

“Great cottage and fab location.”

Took a few minutes to work out the shower but soon sussed it. Maybe a note in the folder about the water pressure etc would help. Also our dogs managed to get under the gate into the gravel area so maybe an extra plank on bottom of the gate would help otherwise great to have the separate paddock. King head was lovely, great food and friendly. Overall 10/10. Would definitely recommend.

“This is a lovely barn in a convenient location.”

The grounds are lovely and safe and our three dogs loved it. The barn is well presented, very comfy and clean. We had everything we needed and more, plus lovely scones with jam and cream and a thoughtful pint of milk in the fridge to welcome our arrival. We saw comments about hot water - there were five of us and we had no issues at all. Beds were really comfy and we had a relaxing, lovely time.

“We were looking for a holiday with a games room.”

There were no photos of the games room on the listing so before we booked I called Sykes customer service to ask if the pool table and table tennis were full adult size. The person I spoke with didn’t know so called the owners whilst I was on hold, to be told yes they are full adult size tables. There was huge disappointment when we arrived as the pool table was not a proper pool table and it wasn’t useable as it was damaged with all the balls going over to the right hand side when you hit them. We had paid a premium to have the games room, but it is not fit for purpose. The property was clean, but you needed to wash kitchenware before using it as often things that hadn’t been used for a while had cobwebs on them. Tiny fridge for the size of the property, with no freezer compartment. It would definitely benefit from having a freezer in the house as it’s not very convenient with it being in the garage. It would be fine as an overflow freezer but you really do need access to even a small compartment in the kitchen. The visitors information says no dogs are allowed in the bedroom, but clearly previous guests have ignored this as the main bedroom stank of dogs. Very overpriced! Location is very good with fantastic views. Our neighbours (cows) were the best!

I have stayed in many places like this over the years and have never been asked to strip the beds and collect the towels . When you have two small children and you are trying to pack the car to get home this is the last thing you want to do . I expect all of this to be included in the price of hire . It would make me think again about booking a cottage with your company .

“This is a lovely property and Maureen is so welcoming.”

We didn’t have any problem with the WiFi The property was spotless and the garden and field brilliant for the dogs, not secure for an inquisitive cocker spaniel though. The close proximity to the A30 made it easy to visit other areas. My one recommendation would be to find a way to put an en suite in one of the bedrooms as 1 bathroom for 4 adults was not really adequate. All in all one of the best holiday properties we have stopped in.

“Everything was as detailed and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this very warm and cosy barn.”

The cream tea on arrival and treats for the dogs were a lovely touch and appreciated. Our only bemusement is of the location of the freezer being in the detached garage when there is plenty of room in the kitchen. Also there is an abundance of crockery and utensils (enough for about 12+ people) meaning little room is left to store your food in the kitchen cupboards. Saying this, I will definitely consider staying at the barn again.

Thanks for your helpful comments. Unfortunately the only space in the kitchen is beside the radiator, which isn't a good place to put the freezer. However we have bought more ice trays and several chilling sleeves for cooling bottles and these will be in the freezer, ready for use by guests. Sykes Cottages advise us to provide two place settings for each guest, which means having 12 sets of everything. But as you found there wasn't enough space for storing food, we have reorganised the china a bit and made another cupboard available. We hope these changes will help you to enjoy your stay if you decide to come back to Jolls Ground Barn again in the future. Property Owner

property very clean throughout and all facilities working. the location ideal for walkers as location gives immediate access to Trewint moor and close by West moor. all round excellent location as easy access to A30 road which in turn gives direct to both north and south Cornwall.We are regular users of cottages and barn conversions and this is by the best we have experienced.

“The barn conversion was excellent very clean on our arrival, a lovely cream tea was left for us along with milk in the fridge, the barn was very comfortable, had everything you ever needed, the garden was nice and secure for our dogs, also had the large paddock behind to let the dogs have a nice run around,also so near the A30 so easy access to reach parts of Cornwall, short drive to Jamaica inn which served excellent food,and a short walk to the village pub, which also serves food,we met the housekeeper Maureen who was also very nice and helpful, we really enjoyed our stay here ,that we have already booked to go back same time next year as such a lovely holiday home.”

“Jolls Ground Barn’s location is ideal for visiting by car both north and south coasts of Cornwall either by main roads or beautiful country lanes.”

The barn is beautiful and comfortable and very well equipped. A home from home feel about it. Cream tea awaits you on arrival and doggie treats too. The weather for our two weeks was the worst we have ever experienced in Cornwall but the comfort of Jolls Ground Barn made it bearable. There are wonderful walks from the property and the local pub is within walking distance. We hope to stay there again in 2020. Thank you Maureen,(the housekeeper) for looking after us and ensuring we had everything we needed for holiday so kind.

“Wow! Just an amazing place.”

Safe enclosed garden for our dogs with the added bonus of the field. The Barn itself had everything we needed, even good sized wine glasses! We loved seeing the cows, sheep and geese wandering past the front garden. Beautiful peaceful location for a relaxing break, but convenient to get out and about if you want to. We have already been looking at possible dates to come back again.

“The dogs (3 springer spaniels) loved it.”

The garden to the rear was perfect for them to run-about in (although not fully secure) and the field beyond was ideal for playing with my toys - Drone and Archery. Its location was a bit distant to the nearest 'dog friendly' beach. It would have been useful to have a 'gate' to the conservatory (to keep the dogs in overnight) otherwise therewas no other place inside to secure them. We thought that the internal doors were a bit flimsey and the latches noisey and not always working (would be better with more solid doors?) It was in-convenient to have the freezer in the garage and we thought that there was room in the kitchen for this? The garage/games room was very useful for evening entertainment with table tennis, darts and mini pool table (complete with all of the bits) to play on. Overall a good cottage and very well equiped.

The weather may not have been the best but this home from home is cosy warm, comfortable, and a brilliant location and safe haven for 2 happy dogs to enjoy their holiday with the large paddock and gated garden to play in. “The cottage is in a great location and brilliant at getting to the A30 which takes you most places in Cornwall.”

The cottage is well equipped but the lounge is not comfy to sit about in. Also for us a family of 5 having showers was difficult as the hot water ran out after the 4th shower as the cottage has a water tank so having to wait for the boost water on the heater was abit of a pain. The beds were very comfy and we all slept very well.

“Spacious holiday home inside and out.”

Outside space absolutely amazing for dogs and totally secure for them . Cottage extremely well equipped. Easy access to many destinations yet right on the moor with walks from the doorstep. Definitely can recommend.

This charming, detached barn conversion is set on the outskirts of Trewint, a sleepy hamlet on the borders of Bodmin Moor, one mile from Fivelanes and just eight miles from Launceston.

Tucked away down a farm lane, on one and a quarter acres of land with beautiful views and easy access to the A30, Jolls Ground Barn is the perfect retreat for families, friends and couples exploring Cornwall.

A large, gravelled drive at the front of the cottage provides plenty of parking space and sensational views of rolling countryside.

In the cosy, functional kitchen, a Belfast sink enjoys a glimpse of the views fronting the property, and the large, modern double oven is great for keen cooks - you can bake and cook delicious meals with fresh, tasty Cornish produce.

From the kitchen, the cottage opens into a social sitting room with two comfy sofas and a beautiful granite chimney breast housing a woodburning stove.

The conservatory, accessed through the sitting room, acts as a bright dining room where you can soak up the afternoon sun and marvel at the countryside beyond.

Plan the day, write your postcards and curl up in the armchair with a book and enjoy some quiet time to yourself!

On the far side of the property are three beautifully furnished bedrooms, all enjoying delightful views.

They provide the perfect place to rest your head after a long day exploring the moors, that can conveniently be accessed just 800 yards up the road.

Furnished with cute cushions and bright, beautiful bed throws, the rooms have been carefully decorated to create a welcoming home-from-home.

Meanwhile, the garage has been converted into a games room where the kids can play table tennis, darts or pool.

To the back of the property is a large enclosed lawned garden and a paved patio with garden furniture where you can dine alfresco when the weather is warm.

There is also a field where kids and dogs can let off steam.

In Fivelanes is a wonderful country pub serving lovely food, which can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes.

You can enjoy great walks over Bodmin Moor, a short walk from the doorstep, making it an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts and dog owners.

Within 300 yards of the Barn is the open moorland area known as Trewint Downs.

A similar distance beyond is direct access to the major part of Bodmin Moor via Westmoor Gate, quite simply one of the best wild open spaces in the southwest of England with breath-taking scenery.

Bodmin Moor has just been designated as an International Dark Sky Landscape, so you can enjoy the night sky and its stars from the Barn.

The North Coast is approximately half an hour away, where you can explore the popular picturesque coastal villages of Tintagel, Port Isaac and Padstow.

On the opposite coast are the historic fishing ports of Polperro and Looe, with an abundance of shops, pubs and cafes.

In a fantastic location for exploring the border between Cornwall and Devon, Jolls Ground Barn is sure to make your holiday extra memorable.

Launceston 8 miles.

The small village of Five Lanes is situated just off the A30, less than 10 miles from Launceston and is home to the Kings Head pub and hotel, which was built in 1623. The pretty, neighbouring village of Altarnun offers a village shop, a Post Office and church, which is known as "the cathedral of the moors" plus long walks can be enjoyed around the local area. Eight miles away is the town of Launceston, on the Devon and Cornwall border. This town boasts wonderful architecture, including Georgian buildings in the central square, and is dominated by the ruins of a Norman castle sitting high above the town. Within driving distance is the Tamar Otter Park, or why not take a trip on the steam train from Launceston through the beautiful Kensey Valley? This area is near to The Camel Trail, which is part of the National Cycle Network. There’s plenty to see and do in the area, including visiting the seaside resorts of Bude and Padstow, as well as the city of Plymouth, and the stunning Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor are well worth exploring. A lovely base for your Cornish adventure.
