“Visiting in England in November isn’t everyone’s idea of a holiday but Clamoak is I think exceptional.”

From the moment I walked into the house I was in a comfortable and warm home from home. Lovely too, to light the wood burner when there was a storm blowing a hooley outside . The river is fascinating as tides come and go and there are birds are everywhere. The telescope is amazing when you want to watch the waders and sea birds. The garden was safe for my dogs, they aren’t swimmers so weren’t tempted by the river but there were lots of nooks for them to explore. We didn’t venture too ...

We didn’t venture too far but Tavistock, Cothele and Calstock are close by. The boatyard cafe was lovely and so tolerant of my dogs on a wet day. There are lots of games and books to pass your time with and I loved the chance to relax and enjoy some peace.

After parking in the generous off-road space, you’ll be welcomed by a peaceful atmosphere.

One of the standout features is the conservatory, an inviting space for morning coffee, sketching, or watching the sun dip below the horizon over the water.

Both the conservatory and the living room offer sweeping views of the Tamar Estuary, where birds soar above the mudflats and channels, creating a haven for birdwatchers.

During cooler months, unwind on stylish sofas beside the woodburning stove, set beneath original timber beams.

The kitchen is well-equipped with both induction and electric cooking options, an AGA, traditional cabinetry, wooden countertops, and all the essentials for preparing hearty meals.

At the end of the day, choose between a super-king-size or king-size bedroom, both offering stunning morning views if you leave the curtains open.

Outdoors, the side and rear lawned gardens provide space for dogs to roam, while the waterside terrace is perfect for barbecues and evening drinks.

From here, watch sailboats, paddleboarders, and kayakers drift by, an inspiring scene for artists.

The estuary also offers excellent fishing opportunities, with nearby rivers and lakes adding to the appeal for angling enthusiasts.

Just a short drive away, Tavistock offers striking architecture, bustling markets, and a variety of dining options, including The Cornish Arms and the Michelin-starred Crocadon Green at St Mellion.

Golfers will appreciate the choice of courses, with Tavistock, Yelverton, and St Mellion all ranked among the UK’s top 100.

For day trips, visit Looe and its TV-famous police station, or explore nearby Polperro and the untouched beauty of the Rame Peninsula.

Bere Ferrers, just a mile away, marks the meeting point of the Tamar and Tavy rivers and is home to The Olde Plough pub, which serves locally sourced dishes in a riverside courtyard garden, perfect after a walk, cycle, or game of tennis.

For outdoor enthusiasts, cycle the Tamar Trails or explore the many walking routes nearby.

For a slower pace, hop on the Heritage Valley Train to Calstock and stroll to Cothele, where you’ll find a charming boatquay tea room.

About the location

BERE ALSTON

Tavistock 6 miles; Plymouth 12 miles.

Bere Alston is a small Devon village in a beautiful location between the rivers Tavy and Tamar, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village was once a thriving port shipping tin from Dartmoor. Just upstream from Bere Alston on the river Tamar is Morwellam Quay, a tiny harbour where half the world’s copper travelled through in the 1860s, and which is now a popular visitor attraction telling the story of copper mining through history. Trains run between Bere Alston and Plymouth, on the picturesque Tamar Valley line, following the river for much of the route. Bere Alston has a village shop and pub and there are plenty of stunning countryside walks. Two National Trust properties in the area are Cotehele, a Tudor manor house and glorious gardens stretching down to the river Tamar and Buckland Abbey, an estate on the river Tavy with craft workshops and family attractions.
