From soft, white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at Porthcurno to picture-postcard fishing villages dotted along the Lizard cliff face, West Cornwall holds a timeless appeal. Perhaps it’s the raw beauty of unspoilt coastline, open spaces and unpolluted sea breeze, or the temperate year-round weather. Whatever it is, the West of Cornwall is a wonderful resort for couples and families throughout the year.
Why a cottage in West Cornwall
A favourite destination for many, there’s just something about this part of the world that makes visitors want to return time and time again. Beach lovers will be truly spoilt for choice with the warm and sunny Mediterranean-esque Porthcurno, wide and golden dune-backed stretches at Gwithian and Godrevy, crystal clear water at Porthgwidden and sheltered, hidden coves at Church Cove, Gunwalloe and Poldhu. Spend long lazy days soaking up the sun with an ice cream, searching rock pools for tiny sea creatures and building sandcastles – or get out on the water and try your hand at surfing, diving, kayaking or windsurfing.
The West of Cornwall is also known for its unique geographical features and ancient sites, including serpentine rock on the Lizard, and stone circles and an early amphitheatre near Land’s End - best discovered whilst out walking the coastal footpath with a picnic.
Places to visit in West Cornwall
Sit back and relax with an open-top bus tour of the far west. The Explorer 300 runs between May and August each year, taking passengers on a scenic trip from St Ives through Sennen and on to Land’s End.
We’d also highly recommend the beautiful train journey between St Erth and St Ives. Hop on board (making sure you sit on the coast-side of the train!) and enjoy some of the best views in the country as the train chugs along the coastal track. When you get to St Ives, grab a pub lunch in one of the seafront taverns or a bag of chips on the beach before making your way home.
Of course, there are plenty of great family attractions in West Cornwall – including Flambards Theme Park, the iconic St Michael’s Mount, Paradise Park and the truly unique Minack theatre. A must-see whether you’re a fervent theatre goer or not, the Minack open-air theatre is set high in the cliffs above Porthcurno beach, with unrivalled views and even the occasional dolphin visitor out at sea.
If you enjoy cycling, we suggest heading to Helston and the Penrose nature reserve. Owned by the National Trust, Penrose is home to plenty of scenic, off-road cycle routes to suit all the family. Don’t worry if you can’t bring your own bikes with you, either – Porthleven Cycle Hire offers a range of bikes and cycling equipment, and may even deliver to and collect from your holiday home.
