Now this next one isn’t technically in Penzance, but we are including it because you can’t not visit this attraction if you’re in the area!
St Michael’s Mount is a stunning island located just off the coast of Marazion in Cornwall, just a 10-minute drive or hour walk from Penzance. You will be sure to see it on every things to do in Penzance list because it’s one of the, if not the, most popular attractions in the area.
You can enjoy a short boat ride up to this historic monument, but the best way to reach it is on foot. At low tide, a causeway reveals itself, allowing visitors to walk across to the island.
Feel transported back in time exploring the historic castle and gardens that date back to the 12th century. The island has been home to the St Aubyn family since the 17th century. You can wander the castle’s many rooms, filled with period furniture and artwork. Admire the chapel’s stunning stained glass windows and intricate wood carvings.

Heading to the beach is always a fantastic idea, whether for a sunny day out or a blustery stroll to blow away the cobwebs.
For our things to do in Penzance list, we’ve included four beaches in and around Penzance for you to check out.
Whether it’s watersports or sunbathing, rockpooling or sandcastle-building, you’ll find a sunny spot for you.
Long Rock Beach sits halfway between Marazion and Penzance and is a great sandy and pebbly beach to enjoy for families.
It’s the most accessible stretch of sandy beach to access from Penzance. The water is shallow here for quite a long way out, so swimming is particularly safe.
Long Rock Beach is a favourite for windsurfers, but you can also have a go at a host of different watersports.
Backing the beach is the South West Coast Path, which also has a cycle way so you can easily go to and from the beach on bike.
There is a seasonal dog ban on the section of Long Rock Beach to the left of the car park (Penzance side). It is during July and August between 10am – 6pm that dogs are not allowed. The other side of the beach is completely dog-friendly.
Penzance Promenade Beach is a shingle and pebble beach located in the heart of Penzance. The beach is a popular spot for locals and tourists, and is backed by the Victorian seafront and Jubilee Pool.
Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the shores, before exploring the promenade cafés, restaurants, and shops.
The beach’s pebbles and shingles provide a unique and varied texture, perfect for beachcombing and rockpooling. It’s a great spot for snorkeling and wild swimming at higher tides too.
There’s also a seasonal dog ban on Penzance Promenade Beach during July and August from 10am to 6pm.
Marazion Beach is a long and sandy beach located just a few miles east of Penzance. This beach is famous for its stunning views of St. Michael’s Mount and is one of the most picturesque beaches in Cornwall.
There’s rockpools to explore near the Marazion Harbour and Chapel Rock, and sand dunes to wander through too.
This beach can get very windy so it’s great for windsurfing and sailing, with a windsurfing school at the end of the beach.
Of course, at low tide the beach stretches out all the way to St Michael’s Mount. At higher tides it’s still a great depth for swimming and watersports.
There’s a dog ban during July and August 10am to 6pm, but outside of those hours and months you can explore with your pup.
Perranuthnoe Beach is just under a 15-minute drive from Penzance but the trip is worth it. Just a mile from Marazion, you get the fabulous views of St Michael’s Mount but it’s usually quieter than Marazion Beach. It’s popular with the locals, but you can avoid the crowds.
It’s very sandy with only some shingle at low tide. Known locally as Perran Sands, the same as the beach at Perranporth, it’s popular with surfers.
Backing the beach are red clay cliffs, which are susceptible to erosion so it’s a good idea not to set up too close to them. And don’t explore the caves either just to be safe.
However there are loads of rockpools to explore in the granite outcrops and big rocks on the eastern side of the beach, good for climbing.
There’s a seasonal dog ban on Perranuthnoe Sands during July and August from 10am to 6pm.
The village of Perranuthnoe sits behind the beach and is home to a few cafés; the Cabin and the Peppercorn. There’s also a village pub, The Victoria Inn.
