Why Is Porthcurno Famous?

Porthcurno is most widely known for its hi-tech history as an international telecommunications centre. Around 150 years ago, the first international telegraph cable was brought onto the shores of Porthcurno Beach, connecting Britain to India and other parts of the British Empire. There is now a museum and cable station hut here to provide you with the history of submarine telecommunications.

Is Porthcurno Beach Easy to Access?

Porthcurno Beach is generally considered accessible for most visitors. The car park is a short walk from the beach and final access to the beach is via a short set of steps, so bear this in mind when travelling with children, those with mobility challenges, or those using wheelchairs.

Is Porthcurno Beach Safe to Swim?

Porthcurno Beach is generally considered a safe beach for swimming, but as with any beach, it is important to be aware of certain conditions and take the necessary precautions to keep you and your loved ones safe. Some factors to consider:

  • Lifeguards: Porthcurno Beach has lifeguards on duty from May to September between 10 am and 6 pm. They provide supervision and assistance to ensure swimmers are safe and as a general rule of thumb, you should always swim within the designated areas.
  • Tidal Currents: Known for its clear waters and fairly sheltered bay, Porthcurno is ideal for surfers and swimmers but it is still subject to tidal currents. Strong tidal currents can make swimming challenging so it is advised to only swim within your ability and if you feel yourself getting tired or being carried out further than you would like, get out of the water.
  • Weather Conditions: Weather conditions can impact the safety of swimmers and surfers on any beach, so be sure to check the weather forecast before heading out. Check for wind changes and wave conditions as stormy weather and rough seas can make for dangerous conditions. It’s best not to swim at all during these times.
