How to choose a pumpkin

large ripe pumpkin

During your Cornwall pumpkin-picking adventures, you’ll need to know what to look for when choosing your pumpkin.

How to tell if a pumpkin is ripe:

  • A ripe pumpkin should have a firm rind
  • Look for a strong colour all over
  • The exterior should be hard enough to resist denting when you press your fingernail to it

Top Tip: Tap on the rind and listen for a nice hollow thump sound like a drum!

How to harvest a pumpkin

  • Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the thick stem.
  • Cut the stem around 3 or 4 inches from the top of the pumpkin – a longer stem helps ward off decay.
  • Carry your pumpkin from the bottom rather than the stem to avoid damaging the stem.
  • If you damage or break off the stem, it can expose the pumpkin to rot, pests and disease more easily.

Whether you’re seeking the main ingredient to a pumpkin pie, or after the perfect pumpkin to carve, there’s plenty of fun to be had pumpkin picking in Cornwall!

Pumpkin Picking Frequently Asked Questions

When should you go pumpkin picking?

Pumpkin picking in the UK usually runs from late September through to the end of October. The best time to go pumpkin picking in Cornwall is early to mid-October. Going early in the season tends to offer you more choice and ensures your pumpkins last all the way through to Halloween, provided they are stored correctly.

How long does pumpkin picking take?

Pumpkin picking can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the size of the pumpkin patch, how many pumpkins you want, and whether there are other activities you can combine it with.

How do you know when a pumpkin is ripe for picking?

A ripe pumpkin will:

  • Have a deep, consistent colour (orange, white, or whatever its variety is).
  • Sound hollow when tapped.
  • Have a hard skin that resists scratching with your fingernail.
  • Have a dry, firm stem (green, soft stems mean it’s not ready yet).
Do you have to book pumpkin picking?

Most popular places for pumpkin picking in Cornwall will need to be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

During half-term and over weekends they tend to be quite busy, though smaller farms or pumpkin patches will allow walk-ins. It’s always best to check with each individual pumpkin patch before travelling.

Can adults go pumpkin picking?

Definitely. Pumpkin picking isn’t just for kids. Whether you’re going with family, friends, or as a seasonal date, pumpkin picking is a great activity for all ages. Healey’s Cyder Farm even allow adults to trade in their pumpkins for a nice pint of homemade cyder!
