Just a few miles outside of Looe in south east Cornwall is Porfell Wildlife Park & Sanctuary – home to over 250 animals which have been taken in after being abandoned, injured or illegally imported.

Quite different to a zoo, Porfell offers a more hands-on experience, where visitors can get up close to the animals - stroking them, feeding them and helping the Keepers to care for them.

WHAT IS THERE TO SEE AND DO?

Starting out as a small venture in 1989, with just a few pigs and chickens, today Porfell is home to all sorts of exotic species including giant leopard tortoises, zebra, monkeys, kookaburras and meerkats!

Discover the Maasai Village - located in the park’s African enclosure - complete with huts built using mud and wicker and decorated with Maasai craft and clothing displays as well as a watering hole. Zebra, ostrich and eland live in the grounds surrounding the Village.

The Children’s Farm - reminiscent of how the park was once – is home to donkeys, rabbits, kune-kune pigs, chinchillas and ferrets all waiting to meet you…

… and don’t forget to take a leisurely stroll through the park’s ancient woodland – the marshy areas home to willow and alder, and ash and oak trees in dryer parts of the woods. There are plenty of park benches throughout the woods where you can rest a while or enjoy a picnic. Younger members of the family will love following the nature trails and taking part in the woodland quiz.

When you’re done exploring, relax in the Savannah Tea Room with a sandwich or pasty – the benches outside are a lovely place to sit when the sun is out, and you might even be treated to a display by the resident peacock. There is also a play area with climbing frame, swings and slides, and a gift shop selling genuine ostrich eggs, books, African jewellery and clothing, toys, key rings and magnets.

To really make the most of your visit, though, Porfell offers a number of hands-on experiences (available at an additional cost to general park admission):

LEMURS BANANA PARTY

OWL FLYING SESSIONS

This unique falconry experience with the park’s eagle and barn owls is suitable for anyone over the age of 13. Learn how owls hunt and help the Keepers make flying equipment.

Join the lemurs in their enclosure and feed them by hand – they’re very friendly and inquisitive, making this experience a really special one for children and adults alike.

KEEPER FOR A DAY

Learn all about the running of a wildlife sanctuary by becoming a Keeper for a day – a wonderful experience for anyone who loves animals. Suitable for anyone over the age of 16.
