I recently heard that the Sandsifter Bar down at Gwithian beach, Hayle (which sadly closed last year) had re-opened under new name, The Rockpool Seafood Cafe Bar & Grill. I loved the place when it was Sandsifter and was very disappointed when it had to close – so couldn’t wait to get down there and try it out under the new management!

I have to say they have done a great job; the whole place has been revamped and refreshed, and with new windows in the sea-facing wall, it really does show case the wonderful location and views. As it was a bit of a grey Sunday afternoon, we chose to sit inside (at a window seat, of course!) and pondered the delicious-sounding menu. They have something for everyone here, from salads to BBQ ribs, chilli beef nachos and all sorts of seafood including crab, scallops, lemon sole and lobster. We chose to have crispy deep-fried whitebait with chilli mayo, and a beautifully presented house salad complete with edible flowers – and it really was very tasty indeed!

We couldn’t fault the staff either, they were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble – when we asked for a glass of tap water, they gave us a whole bottle of chilled tap water with glasses full of ice and cucumber slices, all for free.

We did consider trying one of the very tempting cakes and treats (including gigantic sausage rolls!) on offer on the bar as you walk in, but decided not to as my friend is on a supposed diet… next time, though, I will definitely be trying out at least one cake and one of those sausage rolls!

All in all I would thoroughly recommend this place. It has a large car park right outside the bar, and although it is pay & display, you do get your money back from Rockpool staff if you buy something to eat or drink.

I would love to visit on a nice sunny, warm day this summer, and sit outside on one of the benches looking out towards the sea – or on a balmy evening as the sun goes down, with a glass of wine or one of their local beers. The Rockpool often hosts live music from local musicians, too, so it’s a great place to go for a chilled evening after a day on the beach or walk across the dunes.
