Camelford was once named Cam Pol – meaning ‘curved river’ in Cornish. This ancient town is steeped in history and is a great location for access to nearby beaches and Bodmin Moor. Browse our collection of fantastic holiday accommodation in Camelford and experience this gem of a Cornish town.

Why a Camelford cottage?

The town sits alongside the River Camel, used in centuries gone by as an important crossing between Launceston (Cornwall’s former capital) and the market town of Wadebridge. The symbol of a camel is often used today in symbolising the town of Camelford – however the word Camelford comes from Cam, which means crooked, and Allan, which means beautiful and ford.

The town is often reputed to be the location of King Arthur’s Camelot and legend has it that he met his death in a battle fought nearby in Slaughterbridge.

Each August the town hosts Camelford Show, which includes a cattle and dog shows, and a wide range of arts, crafts, local produce and horticultural stalls.

Places to visit near Camelford

The Camel Cycle Trail runs alongside the River Camel on a disused railway line. The Camel Trail starts at Wadebridge and has two routes – one to Padstow and one to Bodmin. Both routes are flat and traffic-free, providing a safe cycling environment for all the family. There are various cycle hire shops in Wadebridge, or you may bring your own bikes.
